Y axis growling bearing!

My printer has begun to make some interesting noises:

As you can see the growling stops when I put my finger on the right side of the plater. Is this a bad bearing? I've only had the printer a month!

Thanks in advance for any help!

I think what you are hearing might be the nozzle clipping the surface of the infill pattern as it crosses the previous layer.

To check:

Is the sound present when printing perimeters or solid layers?

Do you hear it when making Y moves with no print present?

or X?

With the printer off do the axes move smoothly when pushed by hand?

Does changing to a different fill pattern change or stop the sound?

Cheerio,

I don't think that it's the nozzle. You can see in the video where I put my finger down on the right side of the bed (where there is only one bearing) and the noise stops (every time).

Hmm, tried editing the last and it timed out.

I'll take a look at what you suggested tonight. The plater moves fine by hand with no growling, and I don't always notice the sound when during prints. I'll print something out tonight and change the infill and reply back.

Thinking about this I don't remember hearing it when the printer is leveling the bed...

@diem

No noise when moving the bed by hand everything moved smoothly.

I'm running a long print now and while it is printing out the brim on the first layer - very slowly - I can hear a slight growl only when it is moving both in the x and y directions at the same time. A straight Y move seems to be fine.

Another thing I noticed is that I printed that piece in the video using the .2mm FAST setting for the PETG filament. That uses the Grid infill pattern I think and it's one of the first times I opted for a FAST setting over quality. The print I'm running now is set to quality - we'll see if it is quieter.

@honegod

I'll definitely check those screws when this print is done!

I changed the fill pattern to gyroid and the growling lessened. I also tightened the screws on the bed although they weren't really loose. In general the print is a lot quieter, but I still hear it on occasion.

I took another look at the assembly manual and I'm going to check the location of the ball bearings to make sure they are oriented correctly on the rods.
