XYZ Calibration Failed - After 4 of 4 Points?

Hi there,

I was hoping someone could help me. I've spent a couple days setting up my Original Prusa i3 MK3 kit. I am having a heck of time trying to get the initial XYZ calibration completed. Right now, it will end up displaying a 4 of 4 on the calibration, then quit and error out. I provided a video for that last part. It seems to look like it completed and going to the next phase but it does not.

My question is, does that mean there was an issue with the 4th point on the calibration? Its not like it found some issues with points 1,2 or 3 and finally just completes the test saying "something failed somewhere".

These are the various things I have verified.
- Tension is fine on both belts
- Upgraded firmware (also to RC version)
- Checked Z rods are straight
- Verified no cables are barring X or Y axis
- Made sure the filament mount is correct
- Z calibration works fine
- Mesh bed levelling completes (which is pretty much the z calibration)
- Probe is on the circle (not exactly on it, bit to the right) when set to auto home

Could this be still a bed level issue even if the nozzle and sensor are not running into the paper I set for the XYZ calibration? Either way I am hoping someone might be able to help me figure out what else I should try?

A couple of things that may help you along your way -

Flash your firmware back to the last stable release 3.4.1. Never use beta or even RC level code for initial setup and troubleshooting otherwise you cannot be sure if the fails you are seeing are printer setup or code bug.

Double check all axis movements, make sure there are no hesitations. All must run smooth.

Also check wiring and cable ties, make sure nothing is interfering with movement.

Belts must be tight enough not to skip but ignore the belt test figures.

Redo your Pinda height setting. If you are getting fails when it is set with a cable tie use something thinner like a credit card, or something thicker. Also test the Pinda manually with a metal object when the extruder is fully at both ends of the x carriage.

Hope that helps. Disheartening when your machine fails its tests after build but hang in there. These printers are so worth it. Good luck 🙂

Thanks for the reply Olef!

I decided to make sure the Pinda height was not the cause of the problem and go figure after a couple tries, it finally passed the calibration!

I'm pretty new to this stuff, but after 3 days of plugging away (definitely reading every forum post related to my issues) I'm getting pretty close having it all setup properly. I ran a test print of the Prusa logo this morning (after a couple hours fighting with the first layer calibration) and it printed out somewhat good. Just noticing that the is a weird vertical skew when it layers. Back to tweaking and researching on this site.

Appreciate the help and to the rest of the forum community with all their information!

Look for that thread. You will learn more about first layers than you'd think you ever needed to know.
Download the. Stls in the first post. Start printing. Read the next few posts in the next 12 minutes.
Adjust. Continue to read. You've got 12 minutes. Repeat.

Since I use octoprint, these are the only files I have on my SD card.
See something odd? Verify the first layer.
Change the nozzle? Verify the first layer.
Watch the first layer calibration just stop? Turn off Octolapse. That may or may not be from experience. 🙂

Glad to hear you solved the calibration issue! If you have vertical skew in your print layers make sure the grubscrews in your x and y axis motor pulleys are tightened correctly on the flats of the motor shafts. Also incorrect belt tension can cause this.
