X axis not consistent

My prusa mk3+s started having trouble with the x axis. When running the first layer calibration the long horizontal (x-axis) lines don't go smoothly, and the square at the end is jagged in the horizontal direction.

Other layers show similar x axis problems.

More info about what I was doing before this happened

Before this happened I had to replace the thermistor (it was routed under the heater wires not over them; as described in the online instructions in step 64). It had started catching on the prints and fraying.

After the thermistor was replaced I discovered a new problem, the x-axis was not moving smoothly. It took about 4 hours to figure out the problem. The black nylon filament somehow moved from its designated place (in the hole in the hot end; step 56) to between the belts. It was catching on the belt. It caught on each of the belt's teeth as they went by.

Does it make sense that I damaged the motor and need a replacement?

NOTE: The moral of the story is, "Do not assemble a kit as a committee. One person must be in charge and verify that each step is completed correctly."
