What kind of belts does the MK3 use?

I'm thinking of replacing them with a polyurethane equivalents:

but I don't know what kind to order. For instance, what's the tooth spacing and the "shape" of teeth does it use so that I can get something that matches

The goal, by the way, is to reduce ringing.

Have you swapped put the rubber feet yet for e.g. stiff printed feet? They cause ringing massively!

First I've heard of that. That does sound easier too. Which stiff printed feet do you recommend?

I use six of these with felt pads on them. Printed sturdy with 4 perimeters and 40% gyroid infill if I remember correctly:-)

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2802540

Use the non-lipped version.

It had a direct effect on ghosting - same gcode: before shows ghosting, after shows none (hardly any):-)

Josef Prusa in his article from yesterday mentions that the rubber feet stink - well he did not say so explicitly;-)

I really don't need 50 3030 T-nuts. Any opinion on using https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2621682 printed T-nuts? Seems that this is a light duty application where it shouldn't matter.

I just now ordered the t-nuts. Thanks for the links!

I've also heard that mounting the printer on top of a giant paver stone can also hep quell vibrations, so I may try that also.

Yeah I am quite sure that a hard link to a paver stone should help even more to reduce vibrations. Not sure if it is necessary tho TBH 🙂

Don't forget to have 16mm M5 screws ready as well:-)

Well - I printed 8 nuts, and stripped 5 - then I ordered 10 metal nuts and was very happy with those:-)

EDIT: make sure to get nuts that slip through the slot - so that you do not have to disassemble the front and back plates just to get the nuts in!

EDIT: Example for those "drop in" nuts: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Aluprofil-Profil-10x-Nutensteine-T-Nut-M5-Nut-8/380187272689 - there are also printable ones on thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2762571 (which I broke 5 out of 8):-)

Which kind do you recommend? Countersunk, or pan head, or screw cap?

Just like the ones that are mostly used on the MK3 - how are these called in English? Zylinderkopfschraube it is in German if I am correct:-)

Not really sure what the proper name for it is, but I ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0767FW7LW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Back to the belts.... I have actually replaced my stock belts for something a bit overkill. I went with steel core PU belt and I love it! the only downside is getting the belt stretched at first. It does have a bit of "whirring", but I also opted to use a 16t idler so that added a bit of noise. I also have my printer bolted down to my enclosure base. Virtually no ringing now 🙂

Re: What kind of belts does the MK3 use?

there is some general information here

http://www.sdp-si.com/D265/PDF/D265T010.pdf

stepper motors themselves can vibrate 'ring' and the extruder mechanism can vibrate on it's frame so I'm not so sure it pays big dividends to worry about the belt materials a great degree. We have a corexy based printer with spectra string at our office and I've seen what I'd call ringing on those prints.

PU Belts are known to break for sure with 16t idlers and pulleys, and a bit less with 20t idlers and pulleys.

https://reprap.org/wiki/Choosing_Belts_and_Pulleys

They dont last long, can be a few weeks before the steel fibers break due to the smaller bend Radius.

Thats why they dont get used in cartesians, only n corexy builds.

I think that belts with high amount of aramid are the best and I plan to update my MK3 with them in the near future. I will buy the ones from e3d -> https://e3d-online.com/gt2-belt-upgrade

was about to suggest these as well.

I've bought these earlier today. They are expensive, and E3D sadly does not have before/after pictures about the lessened ringing of these. (asked them via support mail)

I have not had one issue with my PU belts as of yet. I have been printing non-stop for about 5 months. Like mentioned, I think the key part of it was stretching and settling the belt. Too tight, then yes you will possibly break it. Too loose, then you are dealing with inaccuracy. I heard all the nightmare stories of them breaking, but I decided to take a chance. I have a spare 20t and plenty of spare belt incase something happens, but the whole point of going 16t was to drop the belt lower so everything was centered (modified/ centered belt holder for extruder) If anybody wants to go this route, the belts are quite a bit thinker, thus I had to modify the belt holders to use the PU belts. So far so good 🙂
