What is causing this?

12 hrs into a 25 hr print I noticed filament was no longer coming out of the extruder.  When I went to unload the filament it broke off inside teh extruder & now I have no idea how to remove the piece that broke off inside.  I opened the side door where you can see the set of gears bused to feed filament but only a tiny piece was sticking up and I couldn’t budge it.

In addition when I looked at the print all the external vertical sides have this rough pattern to each layer - see pic.  Any idea what caused this?  Normally I get this very smooth walls which require little to no sanding using .15mm layer height.  Is this bad filament (I’ve been using hatchbox forever without any issues) which eventually caused the the filament to no longer feed in the extruder and cause the above issue as well?

Open the extruder idler door.

Heat the nozzle to printing temperatures and remove it (see the instructions for changing nozzles).  Now, carefully push a small allen key or heavy needle up through the hotend - don't burn yourself - and you should dislodge any filament scrap lodged at the upper end.

Do a cold pull to make sure all is clean and then reassemble.

Is this PLA? The picture shows symptoms of damp filament; damp PLA becomes brittle in time, look up threads here about drying it.

There are several possible causes of irregular exterior perimeters.  About half of them are prevented by regular maintenance:

Come back if this doesn't help.

Thx I’ll try that tomorrow. It is a new roll of PLA that I’ve only been using for the last 3 days …?

It may be new to you but you have no idea how long it has been in the warehouse or how it was treated in transit ... new does not equal dry.  In humid air some filament becomes too wet for clean printing in just a few hours.

So I managed to remove the PLA but during the process I must have bumped the control knob because the tempo came off 280.  I’ve attempted to to reset it to 280 but it gets to 215 and I get a ‘preheat error’ msg.  Also, the nozzle will not screw all the way back in to be able to leave a .5mm gap - I’m assuming because I can’t get the heater block back to 280 deg?

So anyone have a clue how to reset the preheat function so it will heat to 280?  And is that the reason my nozzle won’t screw in all the way?

It's more likely to be a fragment of burned filament in the way.

For any attainable temperature go to Settings > Temperature > Nozzle

RE: What is causing this?

unfortunately I've checked and there is nothing in the way.  when I screw in the nozzle it gets to point like hitting a wall & will not budge any further.  also, that's how I set the temp originally when I removed the nozzle but now anytime I set the nozzle temp to  anything above 215 I get the "preheat error' msg shortly after the temp reaches 215.

any other ideas and is there a way to reset the temp sensor?
