Wall Thickness

Hello,

I would like to make something like cookie cutters. Is it possible to use a wall thickness of less than 0.5 mm for the edges? As soon as I slice such cutters created in Freecad, the entire cutter is filled with an infill in Prusa Slicer.

Thank you

Philipp

RE: Wall Thickness

try "detect thin walls". For more solid advice, upload the zipped 3mf project file here.

@fuchsr

Thanks, but this doesn't solve the problem. After slicing it is the same.

Your model is broken.  When fixed it becomes solid so the slicer is filling it with infill.

You can see it immediately as its dark green.  What did you use to create it ?

Edit time expired.  Sorry I see you mentioned Freecad.  I took it into Blender to look at the mesh itself.  You really need to learn the terms manifold and intersecting.  This model in non manifold and it has hundreds of intersecting faces.

Freecad is capable of generating valid manifold meshes so its something you are doing in the software.

Probably the easiest thing to do at this point will be to adjust your extrusion width, if your using a 0.4mm nozzle it will print at 0.45 by default you can adjust it as low as 0.35 and get away with it, however I would try to keep it in the 0.4mm range. (that's getting pretty thin for something that has to work) anyway after adjusting that to your liking, set the print up to print in "Spiral vase:" mode and be sure to give it 32 bottom layers, then add a Negative volume to the object in the shape of a hexagon and use it to remove the center of the cookie cutter, you will need to adjust the height carefully, so that it only intersects the bottom layers. I used a nut from the gallery, cause I only had a few minutes to write this.

It should look something like this if you set it up right. (keeping in mind I used a nut 🤪 )

Good Luck

Cant fix it properly without pretty much redoing it from scratch but I've repaired it enough to let it actually slice.  Attached project has the slightly fixed version in next to your original.

Your welcome,

I had a bit more time this evening, so I set up a project file and prepared a couple of different versions of the method I outlined, should you find yourself wondering more about it, you can move through it as an example.

I did not take the time to fix the model since it wasn't critical for the outcome doing it this way, however I want to stress that it is very important to produce Manifold models, and learn to look for, and recognize the problems associated with models that are non manifold before exporting to your Slicer. Many 3D software packages free or otherwise have built in checks for this.

The project file is setup to print sequentially in Spiral Vase: mode and the larger one has a Negative Volume on top as well to reduce the height of the cutting edge, so it wont be to weak or wobbly. Each of the objects has specific properties listed under it in the sidebar menu, e.g. number of bottom solid layers, and extrusion widths for Top solid infill since I used concentric for that.
