Upgrade extruder stepper motor with smaller step angle

Hello I was curious what needs to be done if I upgrade my extruder stepper motor with a motor that has a smaller step angle. 0.9 vs 1.8 degrees by step. Is it only a firmware upgrade or do I need to upgrade the stepper motor as well?

Thanks!

This is not recommended without a geared drive as the 0.9 degree steppers have reduced torque vs the 1.8 degree counterparts. And at that point, you may as well just use the 1.8 with a gearbox instead as the additional return of a smaller angle stepper is greatly diminished.

I would also recommend a 1.8 stepper in combination with a 3:1 gear like Bondtech offers. You can either integrate the esteps into the slicer or into the firmware.
I myself have been working with a 3:1 transmission for quite some time, similar to the Bondtech (BMG) with a 1.8 pancake stepper. Runs absolutely smooth and precise.

Thank you so much for your swift reply! I will instead go with the bondtech solution like you recommended!

Take care!
