Unneeded material while using Slic3r PRUSA edition?

Hi everyone,

Recently happened that one part I was printing had unwanted/unneeded material after slicing it and printing it.
It turns out it is repeatable and slic3r will always try to print these...

The screenshot are pretty much self-explanatory.

Any idea why and what's the solution?

Thanks!

Marc

You could try repairing the STL. Try another slicer to see if it has issues. If you want to provide a link, we can take a look.

Hi Bobstro,

When you mean a link, do you mean to the stl?

The thing is that the STL seems perfectly fine (and when you first import it in Slic3r, no unwanted material show up).

Anyone experienced something similar?

Yes, a link to the STL so we can try it out and see what setting might help.

When you 1st open an STL in your slicer, you're just looking at the model -- the shell of the print -- and not how it will print. It's only after you slice and preview that you see the details of how it will print. If the STL model has flaws, you may well get anomalies.

It's the very STL used in the screenshots I attached in the original post.

Can't attach them to the post (invalid extension) so it's on a drop server.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Marc.
For future reference.
If you compress the STl into a Zip file. You can then attach the zipfile

Re: Unneeded material while using Slic3r PRUSA edition?

I don't understand how STL files achieved such widespread use in 3D printing. The model created is simply a collection of triangle shapes. The slicer has to determine which portions are solid by counting layers and assigning them as solid or hollow.

Simple objects are un-ambiguous. Complex models can confuse the slicer. Everything between layer 1 and 2 becomes solid. Everything between layer 2 and 3 becomes hollow. Everything between layer 3 and 4 becomes solid, and so on. Problems occur when multiple 3D objects are merged at the same location. An extra layer can get added and the solid/hollow layer counts get thrown off. Extra objects get created and solid portions can become hollow shells.

One simple solution is to overlap objects slightly before merging them into a single object. Another workaround is to not merge the object, but keep it as separate 3D objects in the same 3D space. Slic3r still treats it as a single component. I am also planning to experiment with other solutions like .OBJ file formats. All of these solutions only work if you have the original CAD files. I am curious what workarounds are suggested for ready-made STL files.

I am not having the same issue. I did have to rotate the part to get this orientation.

The repair options provided in some slicers will take care of many problems. Meshmixer can be used to solve some problems. For complex problems, having the source CAD file is really the only reliable fix.

This is most likely the same issue as
https://github.com/prusa3d/slic3r/issues/831
https://github.com/prusa3d/Slic3r/issues/1158
https://github.com/prusa3d/Slic3r/issues/1119
https://github.com/prusa3d/Slic3r/issues/1102

We are looking into the issue, we are about half way in fixing that.
