Unload Filament Does Not Eject

Hi.  I've a Mk3S+ which has been working well.

But now I am trying unsuccessfully to unload ABS filament.  Temperatures are ok. Looking through the inspection hole at the side, the hobbed gear is rotating properly but the filament does not rise up out of the entry hole. Pulling on the filament does not release it, and in fact it has just broken off flush with the entry hole. What is the best way to get the filament remnants out?

I didn't build this printer from a kit, and I don't want unscrew nuts and bolts by trial and error to access the top part of the extruder block.
I have attached a photo showing the problem. Can someone give me some guidance please?

Thanks

Hi - apologies.  RTFM!.   I've just found a link to what I think I need.  Prusa Knowledge Base | Removing filament from extruder manually (prusa3d.com)

Unscrew the idler screw, open the idler door on the right. You should be able to get in there with needle-nose pliers and with some serious effort pull the filament out. Not always easy but so far has always worked for me. Why it happened is a different story. I usually see it on filament runout with some filaments, and it always appears to be a kink in the last piece of filament that angles the filament so it can't be pushed up. But in your case you seem to have filament still sticking out of the extruder, so that's not the culprit.

Another option is to try and heat up the nozzle, then try to push the filament down with a thin Allen wrench.

Thanks for that, fuchsr.  I eventually got it out with pliers like you suggested.  It came out in one piece, 25mm above the pliers, 5mm below. After that everything was back to normal.

As for the cause.  I did hear a sharp click at the time, when I was expecting it to smoothly eject; probably the filament snapping.  However as for the root cause, I'm not going to spend time worrying about it  -  the ABS filament was an old spool I found at the back of a drawer (dry, stored with dessicant) which was last used about six or seven years ago on a RepRapPro printer I had built.  Had it been fresh filament I would be more concerned, but I can convince myself that there is a case for material perhaps becoming more brittle, or otherwise degraded, with time.  I've now consigned it to the waste bin!

Cheers
