@flyfish

21030  Synthetic Grease with PTFE

Can get it in a 400g tub or tube, most economical

Tank you very much!

I wrote a review of super lube with PTFE on my blog.  I am very happy with the results.  Quieter prints and less mystery crashes.  It is a little thinner than Prusa's grease.

The oil is very good.

Use it at work to temporary fix ceasing bearings and to lubricate Carriage rods without bearings (You can buy it in small oil pens with a very fine tip, great for precision work).

Think it would work better than grease on the rods for regular maintenance to save a strip down to remove the bearings for clean and repack, however, I think I still prefer the Superlube Grease to pack the bearings with on build, and think I will strip and repack the bearings every so often (How often is the big question).

The rubber wipers on either side of the bearings seem to do a reasonably good job of keeping grease in, but I wiped a little grease on the rods with my finger as a test and it all ended up packed on either end after a few prints, suspect the same may happen with the oil.

Would be interested to hear how long the oil stays on the rods before they dry up.

I like to use Castrol Edge 5w-40 motoroil on my sintered bearings, of which I put a few drops on the rods every now and then.

What's good for the car can't be bad for the printer.

Interesting, do you have sintered bearings on your MK3?

We use Phosphor Bronze bearings/bushes on a lot of the large production printers I work with, and find them very effective, they are used on feed shafts running constantly at a rather high RPM, they do eventually wear (normally due to contamination), but can have a very long life.

We try and avoid lubricating them as they are inpregnated with oil at manufacture, and find oil/grease can attract dust and dirt and they start to gunge up causing wear.

Yes, I have installed selfoil sintered bronze bearings (X/Y axis).
This one:  https://caspar-gleitlager.de/produkte/gleitlager/buchsen/50/buchsen-sinterbronze/?c=6

They are relatively maintenance-free and have a long service life. Occasionally I clean the rods with a lint-free cloth and the above-mentioned motoroil. The printer is located in a closed housing and is thus relatively protected from external environmental influences.

From the Castrol I always have oil on reserve and filled for the printer about 10ml in a syringe.

Very Good Idea, I gather they are a direct replacement for the Linear stock versions in the prusa stock Y bearing holders/X axis rod holders?

In know how well these type perform on stainless rods in high speed rotational movements, so the should perform superb as linear replacements at a fraction of the speed.

I am a physician and have ample access to those and never thought about it.  Thanks.

I gather you are talking abou the syringe and not the sintered bearing?

Installation on the Prusa is not without any problems, as much more precise work is required to ensure that the sintered bearings run evenly. The guide shafts are hardened, precision grounded and polished surface.

As a physician, he will probably mean the syringes... 😏

Thanks, good to know.

Ill probably just go with Igus drylin linear guides instead when required, I don't have the tools to complete those extra procedures.

Nor does the South US mixed with Scottish and English upbringing.  Trust me, sarcasm works here.  I must have been tired.

Good to hear, sometimes difficult to interpret how jokes/sarcasm have been recieved over a forum. Sometimes find myself apologising just in case I have offended through my rather dry wit, can occasionaly be taken the wrong way.

I assume parts of your family are from this side of the pond?

Were you brought up in the states or did you spend some time in the UK?

I noticed while browsing the Igus site they do hardened and ground stainless steel shaft, made to your specs with D-Tol H6.

They are actually not too expensive, how do you think they would compare to your ones?

The hardened and ground stainless steel shafts are certainly suitable for any printer bearing design.I myself use surface hardened, fine ground and polished steel shafts, as I had various lengths in stock from other projects. Igus is generally known for good quality.
