Thermistor wire ripped. Can't release grub screw

Hi all,

I had my first blob of death appear a few days ago, and since then i was carefully peeling the PLA off part by part. Unfortunately, the blob settled right on the thermistor wires and i ripped one trying to clean it. I got a spare thermistor, but I can't get the old one out.

What I did:

  • First, I can't preheat as the printer has no thermistor. So I disconnected the ripped thermistor from the board and connected the new one.
  • I touched the hotend with my new thermistor and preheated the printer, while using a (not that accurate) laser thermometer. I stopped heating as soon as smoke started coming off the hotend, which was at around 200 deg celsius on my thermometer.
  • Then tried unscrewing the grub screw, but it didn't move AT ALL. I got to a point where the whole hotend assembly rotates, but not the screw.

Tried doing this a few times, but could get anywhere but stripping my hex key. Does anyone have any trick on how to approach this?

Apologies if this is a covered topic. I found a few people with similar problem that replaced the whole hotend. Replacing the whole hotend is unfortunately not an option for me (high shipment costs. Also, they're out of stock - https://www.prusa3d.com/product/assembled-hotend-mk3s/)

Thanks

Nitay

RE:

I understand your frustration with the ripped thermistor wire and the stubborn grub screw. To tackle this issue, try applying more pressure while turning the screw counterclockwise. If that doesn't work, you can use a heat gun to gently warm up the surrounding area, which might help loosen the screw. Remember to be cautious with the heat and avoid overheating the components. If these methods don't work, I recommend reaching out to the manufacturer's support for further guidance. They can provide you with specific instructions tailored to your printer model. Best of luck!

another option may be an e3d revo6

https://e3d-online.com/products/revo-six-prusa-edition

which has a different configuration for  heater and thermistor wiring that may save you, in the next blob of doom!

If you go 'revo', make sure that you use the Revo version of firmware so that thermal anomalies do not become an issue
