Temporary large Y axis offset while printing – any ideas?
Hi, I'm trying to print a rather large box. What happens is that after 20 to 30 layers or so the printer suddenly shifts the bed ~2cm to the front, continues to print as if nothing was amiss, then after another few layers goes back to the original positioning, prints another couple of layers, then decides to abort with a collision.
The result looks like the attached image.
Any ideas what could cause this? I have no idea where to start looking, esp. because the print returns to the original positioning. There's no skips or other suspicions artefacts before that point.

How many times have you tried this and does it repeat? Layer shift is usually due to mechanical interference, or possibly poor electrical contact. There is a possibility that it's in the gcode, but that's low.

It does repeat but not at the same position, and Octoprint's gcode viewer doesn't see anything strange either. Didn't try to print a third time because I want to get an idea what could possibly be causing this before junking yet more filament, and/or point a high-res video camera at the printer.
The printer doesn't look like there's mechanical problems, Y belt tension is OK. The print in question starts with four layers that fill 70% of the print bed; both times they printed with no problems whatsoever. Also, print speed is reasonably low.

How old is this printer? I had a problem with my Ender 3 where the cable to the X-Axis servo wasn't built well and it would occasionally stutter and skip and cause a layer shift. I replaced the cable and it's been find since. Have you checked the plug for the Y-Axis servo on the MB?

The cabling looks good. The fact that it only occurs after an hour of printing, in the same way, suggests that it might be temperature related. I'll have to dig out the FLIR add-on for my phone, and de-home the Einsy sufficiently so that I can actually measure things. :-/
