Supports are terrible in SLIC3R

I use both Simplify3D and Slic3r as I started with a FlashForge Creator Pro (which is great but too small of a build volume) and now my i3 MK3. I just can't trust Slic3r's supports, they are too thin and flimsy and destroyed a very long print yesterday. Then as they are flimsy the hot end hits them and creates a mess (ABS). I don't have this problem in Simplify3D and will continue to use it when I need supports especially on larger prints.

I hope Slic3r can improve supports such as seeing what S3D is doing. Thicker support walls would help, it looks like slic3r is .1mm and s3d is .2 mm.

Has anyone found better support settings to use to better replicate S3D's?

Re: Supports are terrible in SLIC3R

Have you tried switching the support type from rectilinear to rectilinear grid. That will create a stronger support structure particularly for tall supports. Event on S3D I have generally change my supports to a grid (perhaps you set this as a default and forgot some time ago) because with S3D I would also have weak tall supports. I have the same history as you - S3D on FFCP now moving to a new Mk3.

The thing with the Slic3r is that many things are highly customizable. For "better" more stable support:
1. Use Rectilinear Grid for Support
2. Set support material extrusion width to 0.45

If that is not enough check the Support material options. You could also set interface pattern spacing to 0 and I would increase in this case the contact Z distance to 0.2 (Default S3D is 0.3)

That should give you a pretty sturdy, hard removable supports 😀
