Strange Stuff

Hi

Ok, so I'm guessing my Mk3 is haunted. That's the only *obvious* explanation 🙂

Every so often it simply decides to re-start the print. Just *why* it makes that decision ... no idea. The latest event was printing the ever popular Prusa supplied file "orange or black parts .....". It's running from the furnished SD card with noting hooked to the USB port. The UPS running it and the other printers seems to be ok. No other printers are impacted.

What happens:

It's printing along just fine and gets confused. It shifts the print 10 cm to the right and then starts the print all over again. The other two axis settings are not changed in any way. The new print starts on top of whatever is there from the old print. The result (obviously) is a bit of a mess.

One could say, it's just a random crash ... move on. That's fine, except it always does the same thing. Same shift in the same direction. Same restart the print. Same, does not correlate with anything else. The file prints fine next time. The printer is a bit over two months out of the factory. Everything *seems* fine. Lots of lube on the rods. Belts and the like nice and tight. All the stuff that should move does move freely. All the stuff that should be tight is tight. It's not the filament. It does it with Prusa supplied filament, and with other stuff. It does it with PLA and with PET.

Whatever it is, there is no obvious way to get it to repeat. Print the same file next time and no problems. Wait a week and it does it on a different file running different filament. It does it with files from S3D, S3R, and Cura. Firmware is the latest released version. I have not tried any of the newer RC versions.

Other than this one problem, the printer is fairly stable. I have had it just plain stop in the middle of a print. I also have had the filament sensor false trigger and recover poorly. So far both of those are one off events. I don't have the kit built yet so I don't really know if a second Mk3 in the same setting will do the same thing.

So do I call Ghost Busters?

Yes, it's weird ..... any thoughts from anybody about what to check ?

Thanks !!

Bob
