Strange noise when moving backwards on y-axis

My Prusa i3 MK3S started to make a strange nois when moving backwads on the y-axis, as you can here from the attached video: IMG_0146

I already checked wheter something is stuck between the nosel and the print bed. I also inspecting the belt and stepper motor for any visual signs. All of this looks good.

Any idea what could be wrong?

Best Answer by Tim Weston:

Given that you have checked the obvious, I would assume this is coming from one of the bearings on the Y-axis.

I have noticed a little 'ticking' noise from my printer in recent days - also only when the bed moves front-to-back. A quick check around with a stethoscope suggests that the noise is coming from the left front bearing. I plan to strip the Y-axis down and pack with grease, but I'll order up a set of new bearings before I do that, just in case replacement is needed.

Given the 'screech' coming from yours, I would say remedial action is more urgently needed in your case.

Cheers,

Tim

If the "ticking" you talk about is anything like the thing I'm hearing in mine, it could very well be the sound of the balls recirculating inside the linear bearing during its normal operation 😉 Imagine a tank-tread-like arrangement made out of tiny ball bearings: there is some space between the balls and at some point one of them falls down onto the one preceding it, just before it changes direction, with a tiny click 🙂

Possibly, but the ticking is continuous all the time the bed is moving front-to-back. That said, it also seems to be speed dependent to a defined range - doesn't occur at slow speeds or during very fast moves e.g. bed levelling. I already released the belt and checked the free movement of the bed - slides freely and with no noise that I could detect.

Just have to see how this develops - but the small ball bearings are probably what I am hearing. Hopefully a little grease will help!

Cheers,

Tim

Thanks for the sugestion!

It was indeed one of the linear bearings. For good measure I cleaned alll three and give it some new greace. It's working like new now.

Best Regards EPL
