Stealth mode louder than normal

Hi all,

I came to join the ranks of those facing rattling/scratching noises from the y-axis and - while reading a good amount of posts about the community's experiences and fixes - most of which I applied to my Mk3 Kit, it seemed to me that one particular aspect of my circumstances was not mentioned yet.

Besides bearing & little play in the carriage, main source is the vibration of the stepper and subsequent resonance of the frame structure - no news here.

What strikes me is that the y-stepper motor, when energized, vibrates a fair share more than all of its other counterparts. And, ironically it even increases when switched to stealth mode. To eliminate the driver as source of error, I switched the motor connection on the board with the x axis motor, but only the original candidate showed this strange behaviour. Essentially, holding the motor in your hand, you can feel the buzzing of the motor as mild vibrations. Again, comparing with the other motors, it seems excessive. So I suppose the stepper motor might be a bit faulty. One the other hand, I have little experience with how much a stepper motor is allowed to buzz and what is considered normal. We stud me up is that it is one of five showing this and that stealth mode makes it worse.

Did anyone experience funny behaviour of a single stepper or the fact that stealth mode led to more noise? 😛

best wishes,
Felix

Re: Stealth mode louder than normal

Hi there,
I got my MK3S kit last week. After successfully assembling, testing and calibrating, I've got the same experience.
The Y-Axis stepper is very noisy. I set up some g-codes to find the worst resonance frequency and it seems that
it's the noisiest at around 45-50mm/s. It's an awful sound, like a vacum cleaner.
For the test I disconnected it from the belt, so it was free running. As you wrote, you can feel the steps in the vibrating motor.
The X-Axis however is quit at every speed.

I also have a Creality Ender-3 which I changed to MKS-Gen-L with TMC2130 drivers (SPI).
When running this one in Stealth-Mode, it's really almost unhearable. You could almost run it in your bed room.
My Ender-3 is still not as loud in Normal-Mode as teh MK3S in Stealth-Mode.

May be it's a bug in the firmware or may be the Y motors are different from the other axis?
I wrote this today to Prusa, let's see what they come up with.
I hope there will be a fix soon, because with that roaring noise, I cannot run it over night for prints.

RE: Stealth mode louder than normal

Hi. I still have the problem with resonance in the Y-axis stepper motor in stealth mode. Does someone have a solution in the meantime?

RE: Stealth mode louder than normal

I have had my new MK3 running for a week and it has been doing great. I forgot about stealth mode for a while and have just been trying it out. It starts great with the first layer at 20mm/s and is silent. perimeters at 45mm/s are also very quiet. Infill at 80mm/s is no quieter than normal mode.  I haven't isolated this to the y-axis but this appears to be the same problem the OP posted. It's no louder than my MK2S but louder than advertised.
