squeaking from x-axis idler area

I seem to have the same problem that has been reported by many others: irritating squeaks from the x-axis idler pulley area, very similar to:

I tried applying some machine oil, which may have helped slightly, but the problem persists. It's a very irritating squeaking noise, almost like fingernails dragging across a chalkboard.

Ah, so we all can look forward to that I suppose. Let's label that the "long-term solution". Right now, I'm in need of a medium-term solution. Do you have any of those?

I know you're joking, though, because to me you don't look a day over 29. Honest! 🙂

Its an old picture...

Ro be honest i have never had a squeaking issue with the idler.

I did have a collapsed bearing on the x axis of my mk1 prusa. Afterloads of printing

I bought 5 bearings. So i would have spares next time it failed... i have no idea where the spares are. But i havent needed them .

I recentlyreplaced the y axis idler. Simply because i had it handy and had the 2.5mm allen key in my hand.
Its now a toothed wheel. Twin bearing

Very funny comments! 😀 😀

That noise does indeed sounds metal / metal. Noises are not that easy to identify or even find root location. I had this other, also described as, right X-axis idler squeaking noise: .

In my case I was able to locate the source of the noise and after moving the x belt about 2 mm out in the X cartridge the noise was 99.99% gone. Hope your sounds are like my video so you can then try this fix. :ugeek:

Thanks. I listened to yours, which sounds like the belt is rubbing on something. Mine is much higher pitched, and about 100x louder. It's so loud I can hear it clearly 30 feet away through a closed door.

I'm going to disassemble it, throw in a bunch of white lithium grease over anything that could be rubbing anything, and hope that it works. 🙄

I disassembled it. There's a circular bearing in the middle of the pulley, which is good. So, I doused that with machine oil, because I doubt white lithium grease would have gotten into it at all. Then, I smeared both sides of the pully with white lithium grease in case it was rubbing against the plastic of the fixture that was holding it. Lastly, when putting it back together, I didn't tightened the bolt quite as much as the first time, because there's a chance I had compressed the enclosure the first time, resulting in a metal on plastic squeak.

Bottom line: it worked! No more squeak. 😀 😀 😀
