Second layer temperature issues

Hi there -

I’ve had an mk3s for about 7 months now, and been 3D printing for about 4 years. After much success, I’ve run into an issue I just don’t understand. 

 

I’m printing the first layer perfectly, but as the printer begins the second layer the temperature just stops working. It stops heating completely. It just cools until the temperature is below the threshold to spit out filament - then it stops and considers itself done right on the spot.  

 

I’ve tried a bunch of different prints, with GCode from prusaslicer, and simplify 3D.  I’ve upgraded firmware and then reflashed the firmware.  I rebuilt the hot end and checked the wires to make sure there was no short  

 

I’m at my wits end.  Has anyone seen this?

Sounds like the printer is getting lost when the print fan turns on (like a thermal runaway).

Run the PID calibration from the printer's menu.  This should help with heat recovery when the print fan turns on.  And, buy a silicon sock for the heater block; and after installing it, run PID again because thermal characteristics will change with it on.

Hi,

are you talking about PLA? Before the second layer, the print fan is started. This extra air requires the heater to heat much much strongly. If the heater is not  in good condition, the temperature starts to fall down till it reaches the treshhold.

Check the  heater resistance. Not sure about the correct value, I think something like 5-6 Ohm. On Prusa chat they will tell you correct value, or somebody can post here.

Also silicon sock helps to minimize this, but in case of poor heater, it will not save it.

If you need to print in between, just reduce down the print fan, from 100% to some 30%. You can slowly increase it back in next layers. You can do that in Slicer or directly in printer menu just after first layer (not sooner).

Thanks all!  I'll set up a chat to check out the proper resistance, and will test.  In the interim, I do have a silicon sock, so I will run a PID calibration and go from there.  I appreciate all the ideas.

Thanks everyone.  I got it squared away.  Tim's answer set me on the path, and Milo's suggestion did as well.  I always get frustrated when I find an old forum post and the OP never says how it got resolved.  

 

Here's what I did.  Followed Tim's suggestion, ran the PID, slipped a sock on, and that helped.  It would print again, but problems cropped up not long after.  Came back and re-read things, checked resistance on the heating element, and that was it.  Replaced the heating element, and it was as good as new.
