Replacing PEI Sheet

Due to my learning curve with the printer my PEI was not in the best of condition, so I decided to replace it. I followed the instructions that Jakub published, but he kinda skimmed over a very important part. Removing that damn adhesive is not for the impatient. I spent several hours soaking in 100% d-limonene and scraping. At one point I was looking to bring out the Holy Hand Grenade! I finally got it clean “enough” and then applied new 3m adhesive and Gizmodorks 1mm PEI. Just posting this to let others know it’s not what I would consider a major undertaking, you just have to be patient with the adhesive removal and good results are not that difficult. Real happy with the new surface.

Yes

Care to share a picture of your PEI job? The only one I saw, was... poorly done. It looked like it was removed with a grinder... and then used a grinder to smooth it out.

Re: Replacing PEI Sheet

I have replaced pei on both sides of my spring steel shet. Yes, making the steel sheet 100% clean was very hard (yes, I used limonen). Removing adhesive from MK2 heatbet was much easier. It looks like it stick much much better to the steel thank to the surface of MK42 prinbed.

I hate to replace PEI on my MK2S. I'm pretty sure will buy a new MK3 sheet, once my current one will be worn out.

Here is a pic. The surface is glass smooth, what looks like crap are tiny amounts of the adhesive I didn’t get off the steel sheet. It doesn’t affect the prints in any way, the PEI I used is 1mm thick.

Re: Replacing PEI Sheet

Thanks,

I appreciate that dissolving the adhesive will be more difficult on the steel sheet. I've had to order PEI sheets from Prusa which is a bitter disappointment with their inability to deliver the powder coated PEI sheets or even the smooth PEI sheets they ship with.

Well since Prusa doesn't seem to be forthcoming with new spring steel sheets better get ready to replace the existing PEI. Small price since the printer is so good.

It looks a bit rough finish wise with the old adhesive still there. I could accept that though. Lol

Re: Replacing PEI Sheet

Do you have links for what PEI you ordered specifically, I know you said Gizmodorks, but did you order a bigger sheet and cut it to fit? I've damaged mine pretty good and may have to replace it sometime soon on one side.

Yes, I bought the 12x12 and trimmed it with a dremel tool cutoff wheel after install. If you only do one side you won’t be able to flip your plate over due to different live z offsets. I think the Prusa pei is .175mm thick where this is 1mm thick. Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074XLD5QH/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
