So I got my PINDA probe sorted out for now. I also just re-replaced a the extruder gears, PTFE tube, heatsink (with a bowden clip), and nozzle. So pretty much everything except for the heat break. And it jammed again printing PLA, about 1h30m into a print. So I'm going to try re-replacing the heat break, and that doesn't work...I don't know. I will try printing in PETG and ABS, to see if that's any better.

So I've replaced everything that filament contacts. Maybe it is a software issue, then?

When you replace the heat break, order a NON-PRUSA version from Amazon, make sure it is an original E3D-V6 normal stainless version.

 

Unless you are using some bizarre profiles, probably NOT a software/firmware issue. But flashing a very old version of firmware, 3.5 or so, then doing a full factory reset with full EEPROM data clear, and running through the wizard may be useful.

I wanted to give an update. I think that I found a solution! So for a couple months I have been printing exclusively in PETG, since it never had any of the above issues. That would be fine, except for the spools and spools of PLA that I already had. So I never gave up.

I had my thermometer placed in front of enclosure, near the door. It was more easily visible that way. But one day I reached for a dropped item in the back of the enclosure, and it was noticeably warmer back there. I moved the thermometer to the back, and found that it was around 90*F when printing, which is about 10 degrees more than I though it was. So maybe I had an ambient temperature problem.

I went and ordered a pair of USB powered fans, and pointed them at the extruder from different directions. And by golly it worked. These fans don't move much air, but it seemed to be enough. I can print in PLA again! I managed to do an 11 hour print in PLA, where as before it would always jam after 2-3 hours. I have done close to a dozen 3+ hour prints, without failing. I highly recommend this solution.

@magnocain, or anyone else. I just got an MK3, had a couple of successful prints with PLA on 0.4mm nozzle (room was 65°f to 70°f), then experienced the same under-extrusion or jamming problems like MagnoCain for the past few weeks with a 0.3mm nozzle and the room temp being around 80°f to 85°f. Joys of no AC adobe houses in the desert SW.
 
(This could be bull-shalarky,) But I think the lack of heat transferred from the nozzle is preventing the extruder from getting its desired temperature gradient, nozzle hot, and the rest of the assembly ambient. So to prevent insanity and sadness, I've stationed a room fan (22in dia) on a low setting (which is pretty medium) to see if this can get me past the 1-hour mark on prints. And hopefully to the 48 to 120 hr mark which I need.
 
I have been tinkering with settings and other sheeesh, but this forum has reminded me of the reality of hot rooms and 3d printing (with PLA).

Similar issues

MagnoCain i'm having similar issues with larger prints did you just supplement the fans or have you upgraded the actual onboard fan?

my unit has been sitting for a year or so so i had to catch up maintenance (new e3d .4 nozzle, ptfe tube, new thermal compound on the heat-sink). have the same jam issue after the ptfe tube with the 2mm obstruction on the .05 ultra detail settings. trying the .2 detail settings now but id like to figure this out to use the finer detail modes

Printing Update

I haven't had a jammed nozzle after using:

  • a silicone sock
  • layer heights that are 25% to 75% the nozzle diameter
  • QUALITY NOZZLES, that are standard Prusa MK3 nozzle sizes (like 0.25 0.40 0.6 0.8)

Room temperature can still get up to 85f during the day, and that doesn't seem to bother the prints. I have been quite conservative with layer height though going no thinner than 37.5% or 40% because my prints need tons of retractions.

Also @airhead151 I was using a moveable floor fan. And I suggest a silicone sock for stabilizing your hotend temperature for those finer print settings, but being that you are using 12.5% (0.05/0.40) layer heights to your nozzle diameter. And if your parts have a lot of retractions you might be doomed at that fine setting, so I would also suggest getting a nice 0.25mm nozzle to handle that if that is the case.

bruh

spoke too soon, it just jammed 10 hours into a 36 hour print (0.25 noz, 0.10mm layer)
