RE: Reel jammed leading to this mess - recommendations?
No, just clean it out. Some compressed air to blow it out, a toothpick or brush to clean the gears. Adjust the tension. When you unload filament, you should see minor teeth marks from the gears, but the filament shouldn't be deformed. Being too tight can squish the filament, too lose can cause it to slip. This is not a big deal. Read up on occasionally lubricating the gears.

Might also want to cover the prefer tube before blowing stuff out to stop any metal shavings going down into the hot end and causing a clog, which would repeat the cycle of problems. If you suspect that there may be stuff already down there then a series of cold pulls would probably be a very good idea.

Thanks bobstro and neophyte. Used my Dyson vacuum cleaner to suck the dirt out and a horse shoe nail to clean the gears. It's all nice and clean both ends, now I just need to deal with the bit of filament in the middle, but there are several threads on that. It's all good experience!

I use a dental explorer to clean out the hobbed gears when there is a need to do so.
