Rateling y-axis
Good evening.
I have a ratling noise on my y-axis on my mk3s+ kit build.
I think it began when I tightened the y-axis belt in combination with the textured sheet, I have used the prusa belt tension meter end it is within limits on the lower end.
I have search the web and this forum and many have encountered this issue but I cannot find a solution.
Is there anybody here that have made a connection between the belt tension?
I attached a sound clip of the noise.
Besides that the printer is amazing so far 🙂
Best regards
Not sure what kind of file that was... it "executed" - you better not be hacker.
Giving you the benefit of a doubt - damn, should just never download anything.
Rattling on the Z is due to bearings not being greased during assembly - 99% of the time. It's fairly straightforward to make the printer nearly silent - but if you are using the bearings that came with your kit and you did NOT do the maintenance procedure on the bearings, you're heading for problems until you take the printer back apart and pack all of the linear bearings with grease.
RE:
Thank you for your answer
I did not "pack" them with grease just lube them with superlube on the smooth rods and moved then back and forth. (No offence but just doing it my way)
I do not believe packing linear bearings is the right thing to do after +20 years experience with bearings of all kind.
The sound Bagan when I tightened the belt and if I put a finger very light on the rear right corner the sound vanish.
Enjoy the rattle
I don't run linear bearings on my printers - but the bearings only come packed with shipping oil (not lubricant). So the very common complaint is "my Y movements are noisy" - because the balls are dry. There is no lubricant left in your bearings. Don't like lubricating them due to 20 years? You'll be back.
RE: Rateling y-axis
I know they are treated with a rust inhibiting oil that contains PTFE that surely will keep them in working order for a while and I did lubricate them lightly with additional superlube.
When it comes to lubing of small linear bushings - less is more is my opinion.
You do not want the small balls in the bearing to stick together and not be able to move freely, off course they will be silent for a while when they just slides over the rod packed with grease.
A friend of mine have been running his ultimaker 2 almost daily with misumi LMUW6 since 2015 only lubing once in a while with a drop light regular sewing machine oil on the rods and the printer looks like new so is there a design problem with Prusa printers that demands special care i wonder?

I'm afraid your way of thinking is wrong. The thing is, for 3D printer use, we don't lubricate linear bearings with grease to reduce wear in first place. We do that to dampen resonance (noise), because every linear bearing has tolerances (balls need to move/rotate).
And no, we don't just lubricate shaft surface. Grease must be pushed into bearing's balls pockets, by using some applicator. That way grease doesn't stay inside only for "a while". At least in this case, more is more.
Prusa uses standard linear bearings, so we can't talk about some design flaw in this case.

Okay I see...
You got a good point there regarding the noise 👍🏻
The rattle Bagan when I tightened the belt so maybe the load on the bearing have changed in some way and in that case it might help to grease pack them to reduce noise.
Do prusa ship their kits with genuine Misumi bearing and rods?
If not it might be considered to invest in a set of Misumi rods and bearings ..or maybe even SKF LBBR8?
RE: Rateling y-axis
I think only you can determine where from exactly noise comes and what's the cause.
In Prusa shop, we can read that Misumi bearings are used for MK3S+. But then, any other decent brand would do the job as well, I think.
I recommend to properly lube bearings first and then do adjustments as necessary -patience can save money 😉 .

I might give that a try on the y-axis and see if I can get rid of the anoying sound that's driving me nuts 😂

In standard applications the internal air volume of bearings should never be filled completely with grease.
In the bearing industry, in most cases only 10 ... 40 % of the max. possible amount of grease is applied in factory sealed bearings.
Too much grease causes resistance to fast movements.

+1 👍🏻

Any source how much that influences speed & precision in 3D printer? Not much (if at all) in my opinion. Stepper motors have more than enough torque to overcome that.
But then, everyone should maintain his printer the way he thinks works best for him.

Hi folks!
I did change to the smooth sheet to print some PLA and printed these feets
https://www.prusaprinters.org//prints/1727-anti-vibration-feet-for-prusa-i3-mk3s
The printer is now dead quiet.
Is it still the bearings that is not "packed" with grease i wonder?
Cheers

That's great to hear. Resonance 🙂
Glad to hear. Happy printing
