Random Errors: WARNING - Received an error from the printer's firmware: HOTEND THERMAL RUNAWAY

Have been printing for a few months without a single issue. Suddenly, I started receiving this message on occasion:

"WARNING - Received an error from the printer's firmware: HOTEND THERMAL RUNAWAY"

Here's a sample of a print:

Send: N1815 G1 X90.988 Y123.394 E0.68499*107
| Recv: ok
| Send: N1816 G1 X90.958 Y122.846 E0.01867*98

| Recv: ok
| Send: N1824 G1 X90.937 Y120.552 E0.01967*97
| Recv: Error: HOTEND THERMAL RUNAWAY

The printer crashes and displays a bunch of garbled text on the LCD screen. It does not respond unless I reset.

Printer: MK3s w/ 3.8.1 firmware (happened with previous version too, just upgraded)
OctoPrint: v1.3.12
Slicer: PrusaSlicer 2.1.1

Temps look stable otherwise. This happens with all material using the default temperature/print profiles in Slicer. I've checked all the connections and everything appears to be in order...

Sorry if I'm not providing enough info, I'm still kinda' new to this.

Let me know what you think, thanks!

Check the ambient temperature, should be more than 15 degree; nozzlefanspeed to high; thermistor or thermistor cable defective or loose contact when axes are moving in X or Y or X/Y?

Try to initiate PID tuning

Temperature's not the issue; it's in a temperature controlled office.

The PID Tuning passes without issues.

The temperature remains stable (+-.3C) until it fails completely. I'm going to try from a SDCard next.

If it bombs from a SDCard, I'm suspecting a thermistor issue. No idea where to get a replacement; living in the states makes it harder/slow to import from Prusa.

@bill-k12

I got the same issue as you did. Changed the thermistor and redid the PID tuning but the temperature of the hotend cant seem to reach the target temp when printing.

@jayang19

maybe you will find the solution here:

https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3s-mk3-assembly-and-first-prints-troubleshooting/hotend-thermal-runaway/#post-97920

Also check thermistor resistance; should have 100k. E3D thermistor you can find here:

https://www.matterhackers.com/store/printer-accessories/e3d-thermistor-cartridge

Also try to reduce fan speed and use silicone socket.
