R4 Fan shroud - Printing in PETG or having printed?

So I'm DIYing the R4 extruder upgrade using the modified parts posted here for an indirect laser sensor. I've seen reports that the hotend shroud is fine if printed in PETG though Prusa recommends PC/ABS... (So long as you aren't printing high-temp stuff) and just have a couples spares on hand to replace if it does droop.

I don't have an enclosure for fumes or filament to print ABS and a roll of PC (or ABS) is pretty expensive just to print one tiny part. Being in the US, shipping is kinda prohibitive from PR or I'd just have ordered a kit.

My hotend has a sock to cut down radiant heat... so that should help further.

Any comments on folks that have similar setups and PETG fan shrouds? Or should I seek out someone in the US that is willing to print a shroud in the "proper" material and drop it in the post for a few bucks?

Re: R4 Fan shroud - Printing in PETG or having printed?

I printed the r3 and now the r4 fan shroud in PETG fully aware it may warp over time, I only print pla/tpu/petg. I don't want to deal with abs, if I have to I will move my printer to my garage. I still have the spare r3 in abs from the mmu2, and I will have the abs shroud from the mmu2s upgrade kit. It sounds like they are still sending the shroud with the upgrades even if you opted for self printed due to the abs requirement. So if you do opt to get the mk3s upgrade kit you will get one. With all that said, so far after about a month of constantly printing pla/petg my petg fan shroud has yet to start sagging.

My setup right now is the r3 extruder, black from prusa and the shroud in translucent yellow petg. I have a e3d sock on my hotend as well, the non pro model with the bigger cut out.

Thanks for the info. I did know the fan shroud ships with both kits; I just really don't feel it's worth the cost and shipping. Especially since I am considering an MMU later this year and it seems silly to spend that money now, when It would be included again. Which is why I'm using the modifed R4 with a laser sensor, either until my sensor dies or said purchase is made. 🙂

I'll just print a spare or two and print more if I have to use my last replacement.

Alternately... does PC require an enclosure for smell/fumes? If not... does anyone know of a filament manufacturer that offers free or cheap PC samples? Then I wouldn't have to buy a full roll just for one fan part.

There is someone in the US on the Prusa Facebook group selling R4/MK3S upgrade kits in PC on etsy as an alternative for you as well. I am not sure on the fumes.
