Pulley screws too tight prevents proper operation

I tightened the Y-axis pulley screws, and my printer then failed to operate. For example, the belt test resulted in Y-axis failure. (Not an out-of-range number, but flat out failure.)

(Note that the picture isn't the Y-axis motor -- I just wanted to show what I meant by pulley screws.)

Then I loosened the screws a little, leaving them snug but not apparently too tight, and the printer started to work again.

Why are too-tight screws a problem?

That's the first time I hear that to be the case. Did you re-tighten screws with belt on, or did you readjust belt tension too?

Yeah, that's not it

Print yourself a belt tension gauge.  You got something much bigger going on.  Unless you got the wrong pulley/shaft diameter a semi tight and very tight pulley are indistinguishable to the printer.

UPDATE

Belt on.

My theory is that when I tightened the set screws, I moved the pulley up against the motor, thereby interfering with free turning of the shaft. I loosened the screws, moved the pulley a bit away from the motor, and re-tightened. I think it's OK now.
