Printer constantly crashing after 3.7 FW upgrade

OK, bit stumped here, new to 3d printing but can't fathom a reason for this besides the new FW update

I've got a MK3S that's been running well for a few weeks now short of the bed being very unlevel, but I've compensated somewhat using the micro mesh adjustments. But it's been doing good enough for me that I haven't yet pulled the trigger on bed springs and a proper mechanical level yet because I knew 7x7 was on the way and wanted to see if that would make a difference. I know the printer isn't prone to crashing because it's never happened before and just this morning I finished my longest print ever, 17 hours!

Anyways, I saw 3.7 this morning, updated via FW and had no issues (not the first time I've updated FW on this printer so I'm familiar with a successful flash, plus it said success) on that front, reset my micro adjustments to 0, changed mesh level to 7x7, mag comp on, and 5 tests per spot. Preheated and ran the mesh then tried to do one of my classic first layer tests that have worked fine for me before on 3.6 and previous FW's.

Printer warms up, does the mesh level (which I noticed now may cause the two red wires from the heat element to drag across the screw protruding from the power connection to the heatbed by the way, mine did but I was able to gently tuck up the wires a bit harder so they just clear that screw now), starts printing just fine, but then at 2 different points during the same print it has just rebooted the printer and gone back to the menu

I check the fail stats, nothing shown for last print and my total fail stats history didn't change either time either (had 2 crashes still showing from back in the first days).

Since this gcode worked fine over a dozen times before, and I've never had a crash on this printer whatsoever until I got the new FW today, I can only assume there is some issue with the FW that may cause a reboot randomly?

Any ideas or help would be appreciated, I'm trying a different first layer test of mine right now, that ones going ok it seems but I'm terrified to start any long prints now as I hate to get halfway through and the printer reboot for now reason and then I've wasted that time and plastic for nothing.

Any chance you accidentally downloaded and installed the MK3 version instead of the correct, MK3S version?

Should have been the correct one, I'm trying a print right now so I'll re-flash it again but I/m 99.9% sure I got the right one and it's the top link at the page anyways so I should have even gotten it by accident

It's been weird though:

Every print before tonight, just fine, across 2 firmwares

Update

Failed a known working gcode twice in a row for first layer testing

Worked on another known working gcode for layer testing

Printed a 3 hour part fine using a new slicer (Cura, using the Prusa provided configs)

Tried to reprint the same part with much slower speeds (Prusa provided Cura settings are WAY too fast and jerky compared to SlicerPE so I hand copied some to the Cura config, only changed speeds), printer got stuck on the heat up part, just sat there. Pressed resume print and X went hard right and kept slamming into the far right limit until I powered off

Tried that exact same gcode after the reboot (Fail stats is still showing nothing by the way), just finished just fine

Still haven't been able to determine if the 7x7/5 fixes my leveling issues or not but at least I got 3 prints to work, out of 6...

Going to reflash the exact same firmware again and see if that fixes anything, just wondering if anyone else had odd issues pop up since the new FW?

Re: Printer constantly crashing after 3.7 FW upgrade

Two printers up and running on 3.7.0, no crashing here. I doubt your problem is firmware, it sounds more hardware. Nothing should reset the printer like you describe except the reset button. Try these in order -

Reflash your firmware, make absolutely sure you are using the correct Mk3 or MK3S version, and do a factory reset and calibrate as new printer.

Try running with crash detection turned off. Both mine have this disabled, it has always been a flaky feature.

Also try disconnecting the power panic wire. Some have reported in the past that this fixed random issues as you are describing. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

And disabling the filament sensor ... yeah, even on the MK3S ...

New filament sensor working fine here on a Mk3S and a Mk3S+MMU2S...

Re: Printer constantly crashing after 3.7 FW upgrade

When I went to re-download it it turned out that it was still in my downloads folder, so I know I got the right firmware. Downloaded the new copy and re-flashed anyways, just to be sure. Watched the log while flashing, everything went 100%. Only reason I assumed it was the FW before was because I have never had an issue with this printer besides a very uneven bed and a squeaky LCD case, but the minute I upgraded to the new FW everything went SNAFU lol.

I also turned off the crash detection, we'll see what that does. I'm going to hold on the panic wire for a bit because if I'm going to start tearing stuff down that's going to be when I do some part upgrades anyways (new more quiet bearings, more reinforced parts in a few areas, and maybe fixing the extruder screw-up that comes with the stock one). Hopefully I can get a few PETG prints out by then

I guess the part that sucks is I'll just have to wait and see over time what happens, I kind of wish it was a setting or something physical that I can see that was fixed lol. It's currently doing a send of the part that completed properly, need 2 for a buddy. Once that finishes I'm going to go back and test the first layer print that failed twice, see what happens now

Try to downgrade the the old version and see if it's still happening.

done 2 prints with the above changes (reflash and disable crash protection)

Working out so far... getting ready to do another one soon so I guess I'll just see if that fixed it or what

Re: Printer constantly crashing after 3.7 FW upgrade

I have had strange issue occurring before on my MK3 and found doing a reset all data which clears out all the memory has fixed any bugs.
A flash does not overwrite the EEPROM and there is no guarantee that the exact same memory location in EEPROM is used between firmware's so you could in effect have a variable offset in memory from the previous firmware.

Here is the link to show how to do this: https://help.prusa3d.com/article/SYvbQ66IXF-factory-reset

Normally minor updates like between a RC version and a final version you are OK, but you are best doing a full reset between firmware changes.

Normal people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

OK, just as an update the printer hasn't crashed again, I'm guessing the crash detection was the issue, hasn't acted weird either, just normal prints

Seems like these Prusas come with a lot of nice sounding features that are just broken in real life

Re: Printer constantly crashing after 3.7 FW upgrade

As Chocki said: a full reset is sometimes in order, and clearing ALL data between major release updates.

Also - a crash is detected when a motor requires too much current to step. This can be caused by a bad frame alignment, a bad bearing, a bad rod, or even poor cable routing. Anything that causes the motor to draw more current than average. The fact you are seeing crashes detected implies you have something mechanical wrong with your printer.
