PID Calibration doesn't work

Hi,

I just upgraded to MK3s and had to replace my heater cartridge and wanted to do therefore a PID calibration using the firmware's autotuning. Unfortunately it  doesn't seem to work. Whenever I set to 210+ / 220+ / 230+ C, I just start to heat to ~250 ° C and skips all 5 steps to finished. Meaning, I read on the LCD 0 / 5 cycles and it skips to finish. After that it probably stops heating, but temp reading continue to ~270° and cools of afterwards. Anyone have had this issue before?

Can I do safely the PID calibration with octoprint?

Thanks,

C

Is it a genuine E3D cartridge?

try a factory reset with Data Clear on the EINSY and then a full recal

this is the one: https://www.3dware.ch/E3D-Heizpatrone-40-Watt---24v-De.htm

So I guess, it's a genuine.

@David-a66: I just did one before flashing  from Mk3 firmware to Mk3s firmware and after that a full calibration.

The factory reset with data clear should really be done after the firmware update.  If the config data is slightly different between the 2 firmware versions then resetting before wont help.

Alright, I probably can do again a data clear this evening. I'll give an update then. But if it still won't work, do you think I can modify the PID_MAX settings in the firmware and flash it? Because, it seems, that the heater cartridge gets too much current during the autotune process. I tested the autotune process using pronterface and got the error "PID Autotune failed!- Temperature too high".

Measure the heater cartridge resistance (with cartridge disconnected from EINSY of course)

It should read 12.3 Ω - 15.1 Ω if it is a proper spec 24 volt cartridge. This is to rule out the cartridge being a mislabeled or out of spec unit.

A factory reset with all data wiped didn't change anything and my ancient multimeter read a value ~4  Ω. But still, there has to be a way to change that enormous heating behavior for the auto tuning process. Sure I could calibrate my own PID settings manually, but yeah 🙂 I read about the PID_MAX, I'll try compiling the recent Github version with a lower PID_MAX value in a couple of days.

I am quite suspicious that the thermistor is not actually a 24 volt unit. If it is out of spec, the PID algorithm will not work.

If the cartridge is measuring 4 ohms instead of 14 ohms, that's a problem and the cartridge you received is not as specified. The wrong resistance also explains why the PID process is failing miserably.  The hot end would be heating 10x faster than expected.

You guys are right, thanks. I contacted my reseller, will see, if I get a replacement or something. Because usually the stuff from there is fine. I'll get back and post an update.

Ok, now this is a bit embarrassing, it turned out that I ordered the wrong heater 12V by mistake. I was very convinced to have ordered the 24V but yeah. I got now the right one and the calibration works like a charm. Thanks for your help!

RE: PID Calibration doesn't work

Had a similar issue with one of my mk3s...Whenever I set the pid calibration  to 210+ / 220+ / 230+ C, I just start to heat to ~250 ° C and skips all 5 steps to finished. Meaning, I read on the LCD 0 / 5 cycles and it skips to finish.

The printer had been working fine for over 6 months printing virtually 24/7...the fix for me was to flash from 3.9.3 to 3.10.0....ran pid cal again and it went through all 5 steps properly and holds temp well.
