Open a gcode file?

Is it possible to open a gcode file?

When i import a gcode file in Prusaslicer 2.0.0 i can't see the model but it seems i can see the print configuration.

You can view gcode models in Simplify 3D (not free) or Raise 3D's ideaMaker (free). I use IM.

I see. So the gcode configuration I import is all correct but I can't view the model in prusaslicer?

You can also open the file here:

http://gcode.ws/

You can look at the print moves within the browser. It tends to be a little on the slow side with big models though...

PrusaSlicer does not have a feature that allows you to open and display gcode. In Cura, you can see the model, but in PrusaSlicer for some reason not. This is a big minus of the slicer.

I hope that in future versions this functionality will be added.

A Gcode file is just a text file.  If you open it up with a text editor you will see what I mean, it’s just control commands with parameters. Prusa slicer also stores the settings used to generate that Gcode within the file but the printer doesn’t actually use that bit of the file. It does however let you use the same settings on another model as you have discovered.

the software mentioned that shows the shape of the model from the Gcode are interpreters, they parse the movement commands and build up the shape of the model from the moves. They don’t let you see the original model though, so you couldn’t for example reslice the model. That’s what saving your slicer project as a .3mf is for.  The 3mf file will save the model as well as all the settings so you can come back to it later, change something and reslice and export the Gcode for use in the printer.

prusa did have some older software iirc called Prusa control that did do the Gcode visualisation but it’s never been part of the slicer.

@neophyl

So if I was to find a gcode file there is no way to open it and resize the model? I have found several models I would like to resize like the castle from Prusa research.

re: open/reconvert a gcode file

Voxelizer seems to work (kind of)

Hi Medic, this question is awaining me, too. The tenor of all the sources I found on this topic is "Jeah sure, it can be done, but expect heavy use of blender/fusion360/similar repair software". Therefore, i sucsessully found a thousand reasons to procrastinate.

Please post it if you consider one of the solutions to be nice.
