My printer simply refuses to extrude anymore and I've tried everything I could think of to fix it to no avail

Recently I've been having several issues with extrusion. I had this issue

the other day where some layers would just randomly extrude incorrectly. Even more recently, though, my printer has failed to be able to lay down any filament.

When loading filament, it generally pushes out filament, sometimes having difficulty. When I went to print something though, not a single bit of filament would come out and all I could hear was a clicking noise of the pulleys. I tried a number of things to try to resolve this issue.

I replaced the nozzle to no noticeable effect.

I opened up the extruder to view the pulleys and ensure they were clean and in the proper place. They seemed fine as they were in the correct place and had no filament stuck to them.

I then, desperate to find a solution, removed the PTFE tube from the Hotend to examine it. It seemed clear of debris and only had minimally-frayed edges. It doesn't seem like this could have been the cause for the issues earlier.

I am just at a complete loss on what to do here. I have a brand new nozzle, the pulleys seem correct, the PTFE tube looks fine, I'm not sure what the issue could possibly be but, whatever it is, it is preventing me from using my printer whatsoever. Does anyone have any advice on what I could try now?

Take a look through this thread.

Try raising Z to max, heating up to print temp and extruding filament. Does it come out smoothly, or angle to one side? If it angles, you may have a partial nozzle or hotend clog.

  • To clean the nozzle out, try some cold pulls.

  • To ensure the filament feed path is clear and aligned, I'd suggest finding a smooth 1.5mm rod of sufficient length to reach from the filament guide at the top of the extruder mechanism through the nozzle opening. 6.5inches/15cm should suffice. Make sure the ends are smooth and won't snag anything. Loosen the extruder tensioner screws and open the door. Remove the nozzle and verify that you can feed the rod smoothly from the top via the extruder guide, down past the Bondtech gears into the PTFE tube and out the nozzle opening at the bottom. You can substitute a hex wrench, but it won't have the length to go all the way down through the hotend. Try inserting it both from top & bottom to check for blockage.

I had a similar issue and the cause was the grub screw had loosened from the pulley on the extruder motor and hence it was turning the motor shaft but not turning the pulley. Open up the extruder and then use the menu to turn the extruder motor and check that the pulley is actually rotating with the shaft.

I ended up finding the solution. It turns out my filament sensor was malfunctioning and by keeping it plugged in, the sensor would overheat and melt the filament in the extruder, causing it to not come out properly. By unplugging it, my printer now works good as new.
