Multiple minute-long delays loading/unloading filament with custom extruder step setting

In order to solve the "wood grain" extrusion issues and run a better hotend in my MK3S+ I designed and implemented a custom print head using a HextrudORT extruder with a monolithic extruder gear set.
Everything in the hardware works flawlessly, but when either the filament sensor or a screen command is used to load/unload filament, both commands suffer huge, multiple-minute long delays to complete the process. Once the filament is sorted there are no other issues with printing.
The only thing I changed in the software of the printer is to run the command "M92 E1465.45" to change the extruder steps due to the gearing of the HextrudORT, followed by "M500" to save.
I think I will probably end up scrapping this project completely if I can't fix it, and I'd hate to waste the time it took. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
