MK3S: What is this black stuff I keep having to clean off?
Recently my MK3S has started getting this black stuff on my nozzle and I have to keep cleaning it off or it ruins my prints. I have only printed with this pink PLA for quite a long time (over a full role) so I doubt it's old filement. What is this stuff? Is something on my extruder melting?
Have you changed your nozzle recently?
I suspect you have melted plastic running down from the top of the heater block, if so clean the block and reseat the nozzle.
Pay particular attention to the diagrams at the bottom of this page:

Cheerio,
RE: MK3S: What is this black stuff I keep having to clean off?
It was some time ago I replaced the nozzle. I have not reflected over the nozzle change causing this because there was some time between nozzle change and this black stuff, but I guess it just took some time for the melted plastic to reach the nozzle.
Is this issue caused by an incorrectly installed nozzle? Besides reseating the nozzle, should I replace the plastic part that has melted?
RE: MK3S: What is this black stuff I keep having to clean off?
What plastic part that has melted ? The black stuff is burnt/cooked plastic filament residue. And yeah it can take hours for it to work its way up the treads and out the top. It may be that originally your nozzle was ok for the seal and has worked its way loose over time.
RE: MK3S: What is this black stuff I keep having to clean off?
I thought it wasn't filament because it's black when I've only printed pink... but silly me I didn't think that it would become black after being burnt for a long time. I'll check the nozzle... and clean the hotend.
