MK3s stops printing unexpectively
Hi Prusa Printers,
I received my MK3S kit this week.
Unboxing, assembly were just perfect and calibration process ran successfully.
The first prints (Budy, bearing samples on the provided SD) were amazing.
I then tried to print a piece that would need about 13h printing time.
The print starts just fine but the printer stops printing after about 7h.
There is no error message. The nozzle stays at the same place and the printer starts to cooldown.
I started the print twice with different quality settings and both stopped after about the same time.
Would anybody have an idea about what can be wrong ?
Please be aware that I'm quite a newbie regarding 3D printing 🙂
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,

I'll just chime in here and say that exactly the same thing has been happening to me, though where the printer stops and starts to cool down is completely random. I've had prints stop after 10 mins and 3 hours. First couple of weeks with the printer were flawless.
Have tried reformatting the SD card and also replaced it and the card reader I was using. Filament sensor on and off. Stealth mode and normal. Re-sliced the model. Checked over the gcode. Same appears to happen regardless of settings or print file.

It would be helpful to know if the printer is resetting or displaying an error message when this happens, but it may be difficult to catch if you're not around. I'd log into the online store and contact support via chat. They can work you through debugging this problem. You may want to have a computer connected via USB to catch logging output.
It could be your SD card losing contact, or something more insidious. Do you have the option to print via OctoPrint? That would help eliminate the SD card as a suspect.

RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
I haven't seen the LCD at the moment it happens, but I have seconds later and it's only displaying the usual readout - it isn't completely restarting, because that takes a bit longer and I'd have seen that initial screen. I've since run the machine off a new line-interactive UPS I borrowed from work and also loaded the file and ran the print through Pronterface. It failed on all attempts at different points.
Here's what Pronterface told me at the end of the last print:

It was at this point that I realised it was restarting the print, so I stopped it there. Note that the SD card had been removed from the MK3S for this last print.
RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
I have also contacted support...will report back if any progress is made. Frustrating!
RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
After running through a number issues with support via chat over about an hour and a half, it was suggested that I try running some prints on 3.8.1-2869 with the power panic cable disconnected as well. Fingers crossed...
I can't stress enough just how helpful their support staff are. Stellar service.
RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
Hi,
Replacing the SD solved my problem.
I never had an interupted print since.
I hope this can help for some case.
regards,
Eric
RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
After following their advice, I've completed around 34hrs of printing with no issues. I'll leave the cable disconnected and upgrade the firmware to test some more. For now I'm relieved it's printing!

I would assume that he already has the up to date firmware, I ordered mine in July and received it this week, and it has 3421 on it.
Quite literally was going to post a new thread stating the exact thing, by the way, ericc. I've tried 3 SD cards, (one being the one supplied by Prusa) and I'm still having issues with longer prints. Currently, I have reformatted one of my cards and might attempt a longer print if this shorter "Test" print ends up working.
Sounds like I might have to set one of my laptops up with Pronterface to sit next to it and provide telemetry. Does the printer save the last print information internally or does it have to be tethered to a computer in order to save said information?
RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
I had a similar problem - printer stopping and rebooting erratically.
Printer is connected to our main UPS, so external power problems are not really possible.
After contacting prusa service they told me to disconnect the power panic. This did not help.
Next they sent me a new power supply, no change.
I then bought me a 15A industrial grade power supply - ever since not one single failure.
RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
I had problems with this also, so I switched to a more expensive pure sine wave UPS and the problems stopped for me, I had noticed before that the PSU on my printer was making a strange humming noise when on the stepped sine wave UPS, and that went away also.

RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
Can confirm that it does seem to be a PSU issue of some description. Updated back to the latest firmware and no worries since then. Only change is the disconnected power panic cable.
RE: MK3s stops printing unexpectively
So my printer is now working correctly since I flashed it with 3.9.1 (3518) that was released 21/09/2020, and it ended up finishing a 13h30m print!
Prior to updating it, I tried factory resetting it, as the Prusa tech support had recommended doing prior to reflashing it. He also mentioned something about something to do with a ground cable and linked me to a topic that was over 2 years old in regards to it.
Still yet to fit the MMU2S, but at the very least I can print for longer than 7 hours now
