Making Slic3rPE the default for opening .STL files?

I just downloaded and installed Slic3erPE but when I try to tell Windows to use it as the default program to open .stl files, I can't eve find it as an option. Any suggestions on how to make this work? Or is this one of those "stupid Windows" things that there's no way around?

I'd like to be able to just double click a file name and have it open in Slic3erPE. Right now the default is Cura. I didn't even know I had Cura installed!

If you right-click on any STL file, it should open up a little window where you have various options, one of which is to "Open with >" Clicking on that options brings up another window with various program suggestions, including at the bottom "Choose default program..." Clicking on that brings up yet another window where you can choose to use already installed software. At that point, you probably will need to know the path to your installation of Slic3r PE in order to make that the default.

The above represents how it works on my Windows 7 machine. Windows 10 may be somewhat different, but you should be able to accomplish the same thing. Somehow. 😆

I tried that process prior to posting. Sadly, when the window comes up with choices of what program to associate the file with, Slic3er is not among them, nor can it be found when browsing. Very frustrating! Any other ideas?

You need to go to the bottom of the list to "Look for another App on this PC" and then browse to the Slic3R folder (in my case "D:\Program Files\Prusa3D\Slic3rPE" but yours will probably be a bit different ) and select "slic3r.exe". The stl file icon should change to the the Slick3R icon.

I just did this on my PC and all went as outlined above.

Windows doesn't fully "know" about Slic3r because it isn't "installed" and "registered". You simply unzip the Slic3r file into a directory of your choosing. That's why Windows doesn't automatically present it to you as an option.
If you can run Slic3r, then it exists somewhere on your computer. Make a note of the location and you'll be able to follow the steps previously described to make it your default program for handling STL files. If you run it by clicking on a desktop icon, for example, you can right-click on that icon to find out where it lives.

You can't find it browsing, but it is there because you can run it. If you find the icon that you use to run it, which should be a shortcut to the actual .exe file. You can right click on the icon to get properties and it should have an option to "open file location" - this is where the .exe file lives.
