Main Board Component Falling Off

Had a weird thing happen in that I went to boot my MK3S+ printer this morning and the LCD didn't have characters displayed. Rebooted and got the same issue. removed the cover from my main board housing and one of the capacitors from the board falls out on the table. Looking at the board, I see no signs of access heat and the solder pads were intact, but I can see where the part fell out of the solder. Looks like the component simply fell off at some point. There are no wires anywhere around this component that could have touched the cap. I have standoffs for the wires to hold them above the board to help with this sort of thing. Printer has not been moved, so it only sees the normal vibration of printing. Been a Prusa fan for many years and my colleagues and I have many of them in our print farm. Was wondering if you had an answer on what may have happened here, or if there is a warranty on the board. I have supporting pictures attached. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I would try on-line support

I could just be a board with at cold soldering joint or a faulty component.
Try contacting on-line support ( https://shop.prusa3d.com/) and explain the situation, maybe there is still warranty and you can get a replacement.

Have a look at my models on Printables.com 😉

Hmmm

First thing I notice from your photo is that the two wires from the cap are of different length.

I assume the blob on the long wire (bottom) is solder that filled the space around the support hole?

I have found several marginal solder joints on my board, mostly around the connector pins.

I would remove the whole board for a thorough examination of that area as I would have expected the remnants of the short pin to still be soldered in there. Looks like something is missing. Vibrations, bump, defect at manufacturing, one pin soldered the other loose, hard to tell.

If you have a suitable soldering iron I would be tempted to reinstall the cap (with the right polarity and extension pigtails) as it does look OK and does not seem to leak electrolyte from your photo. At least for a test. If you have access to an electronics shop near you they are dirt cheap.

Best of luck with it.

That'll do it

Yup, if that capacitor has fallen off, your printer probably won't work.

Many components use length if leg to show polarity.

Yup, if that capacitor has fallen off, your printer probably won't work.

Depending on the function of the cap, it might prevent the board from working at all or have no apparent effect (might be belt and braces decoupling) what so ever or anywhere in between.
