Jammed turned out to be damaged Hotend Cable

Was trouble shooting some jamming and remove shroud and fan to find this gem. I clearly need to replace it. What should consider? Do I need to replace the entire hotend? I"m clearly doing something wrong when loosening heatblock and swapping out nozzles. What a mess. Help! I'm not against upgrade to a better hotend at this point. Do I need to replace thermistor cables as well?

You can replace either the heat cartridge and cable or the entire hotend.  I keep one of each in my repair box.  This way I can swap hotends and then replace the heat cartridge later.  You do need to check and/or calibrate your live Z after maintenance.

The heater cartridge is replaceable separately.... IF you can get the small pinch bolt that retains it loose in order to replace it.

My advice is to order the heater element (40w), the thermistor in case it breaks as the wires are fragile, and the heater block in case you can't get the pinch bolt undone.

So far as upgrades, I would wait for the E3D Revo 6 , which should be out in a month or two.  It is designed to fit in place of a regular v6 with one-handed tool-free nozzle changes.

If the Revo was not about to be released, I would recommend the Mosquito by Slice Engineering, which I use, it works great and the easy nozzle changes are awesome. The Mosquito however requires a modified Extruder assembly.

@chicago-keri,

Thank you. turns out Prusa is out and was able to get the 40W replacement cartridge via Amazon, I did throw in the thermistors too since they look pretty hurt. I have the block in my cart. Thanks for the feedback on the nozzle upgrade. One handed tool free nozzle changes sound ideal. So I'm all over that. This down time stinks, but I needed to slice a few projects and I giving the the new slicer upgrade a whirl.  I have a mmu I haven't installed so it may be time do that too. I'm excited about the new features. Happy New Year! Hopefully the swap won't be too complicated.

@CWbullet, yes, I'm learning that having the spare parts are so ideal, but and there is a first time for everything.  Such good advice. I was itchin to print and hit a wall. Almost no supply local ones exists or maybe I haven't looked hard enough. Good old snail mail part waiting is killing me.

I usually order from Filament One or Filastruder in the US.  2-5 days top.

Mosquito: Great hotend.  It has one-hand nozzle removal, but the best part is the high-temperature version.   I have them on 2 printers and except for a rare jam, they have not needed any maintenance in over 2 years.

E3D Revo 6 is promising.  I am excited about this one.  I signed up for the preorder list early.  I can see this and the hotend and extruder for the XL revolutionizing 3d printers.

That being said, I am sure Slice will come out with something new.

@cw bullet, @chicago-keri, I just looked up revo 6 and boy is that a game changer.

I just replaced cartridge but now I'm getting a  preheat error. It's not getting pass 30 degrees. 12v 40W for mk3. Any ideas?

Putting a 12v heater in a 24v Mk3 will probably blow one of the 5a fuses on the Einsy Rambo board

Finally got around to replacing 24V Heat cartridge. The board looks ok on both sides and all fuses are in tact. Any other reason I can't get the heat up on this? Did I blow the board?

RE: Jammed turned out to be damaged Hotend Cable

It's possible, but one of the two 5A fuses should have blown before the board does.  The 15A fuse protects the heatbed circuit, one of the 5A fuses protects the hotend and the other 5A fuse protects the logic, motors and fans. An easy test is to switch the two 5A fuses around and then turn the printer on. If the printer starts up at all, it was OK, if the hotend fuse was blown, probably nothing will happen.
