Issue: Filament not getting through?

This is the first issue I have had with the printer since I purchased over a year ago. Recently I had added the Ikea Enclosure, which would increase heat and change the filament feed mechanism. I have removed the enclosure and still running into issue as if the filament is not able to easily pass through or get pulled into the Extruder. First the nozzle clogged, which I replaced the nozzle.  If you notice this 'creaking' noise coming from the Extruder. I am positive this is related. I have adjusted the tension screws (looser and tighter) with no success. So for now it will start printing fine and after some time the nozzle jams and nothing comes out.  Any insight appreciated.

Sounds to me almost as if the Bondtech gear is either loose or out of alignment. If not the PTFE in the heat break is blocked or damaged.

@pcweber

Can you shed some insight as to what causes the gear to become losse or out of alignment?

Regarding the PTFE, is that the little white tube that the filament passes through on the way to the hotend?  If so, that has no blockage.

Thanks,
Kerry

RE: Issue: Filament not getting through?

I also have this problem. I have had my Prusa MK3s for a few months and it has been printing simple parts big and small just fine using the silver PLA it shipped with in the KIT until recently when I started doing prints that took 12 hours. It fails every single time.

I have tried

1) Raising the temperature for the nozzle with PLA to 220,225 and 230 degrees

2) Cold pull to clean the nozzle

3) Reload filament

4) Set extruder multiplier in prusa slicer to 1.1

5) Complete full calibration

6) Upgraded firmware to 3.9.0

7) Adjusted z height up and down

8) Setting s-> move axis and push a whole bunch of filament through the extruder at 230 degrees to clear any blockages there might be.

9) Took the e-axis apart and put it back together again while VERY carefully following the instructions https://help.prusa3d.com/en/guide/5-e-axis-assembly_28536

This feels like a design flaw where the gear is slipping and not forcing the filament through with enough force or grip or perhaps a combination of some part in the nozzle cooling or causing some sort of a blockage.

I can only think of a few ways to try and solve this:

1) Print parts with a spring tension-er that I can insert into the side of the E axis extruder to help push the filament into the gear which will help it to grip and drag that damm filament into the nozzle.

2) Throw the silver PLA into the oven at 45 degrees to dry it out ... perhaps it has retained enough moisture to cause problems (doing this now) I do not think this is the problem though

3) Swap out the nozzle for a ruby one.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

There's a small black screw that holds the gear securely on the shaft, that might not be tight - don't over tighten it though, it can strip the threads inside the gear and you will have to get a new one.

The PTFE tube is that white tube inside the extruder.

RE: Issue: Filament not getting through?

Guys, I think I have resolved the issue.  I completely disassembled the Extruder and noticed there was some fragments (PLA) inside.  I cleaned everything up and put it back together.  I can now print without the noise and the prints are turning out perfect once agian.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Kerry
