Is this stuff poisonous?

I refer, to be overly clear, to the whitish granular powder deposited on the heatsink and surrounding plastic

I've always assumed it was plastic dust, mixed with environmental dust.

I would not want to eat it by any means, but I assume it's no more toxic than what's floating around in the air.

I've been noticing white powder on my print bed and recently traced it to the same source. Should I be concerned about a hardware issue? Is this something I should regularly clean off?

My machine needs a good blow-out and PM, which I have been putting off mainly due to lack of time and not wanting to take the machine down.  There's quite a bit of dust and cat hair in it.

(LOL, pay no attention to the oddly-shaped failed print blob.)  😉

Its perfectly normal.  I think its the remains of some of the fillers they use in some filaments.  Just clean it off occasionally (I use an old toothbrush).

Many people are unaware that FDM printers are producing a fair share of dust or even ultra fine particles. This is why having a HEPA filter handling the air isn't a bad thing even if it does nothing about the VOCs it at least deals with those particles.

If you are very cautious about your health, wear an FFP2 mask during cleaning but really it should be enough to whipe those surfaces off with something wet if possible or simply leave it be where it is, not disturbing it.

hehe, I was trying to visualize a normally shaped blob 😉

cat hair, to date, not an issue in printer land.  It seems to be contained in my weed supply, PS4 inlet fan, and an invisible dispenser in the closet.

I've not seen this deposit with other machine, mebbe it never ran long enough to create it, perhaps the layout of this hotend allows "the substance" to condense out in the cooler zone of the break.
