Is PINDA v2 noticeably better than PINDA v1?

The reason I ask is that the PINDA probe that came in my I3 MK3 kit has the black tip (apparently indicating version 1), whereas Version 2 reportedly has a grey tip. Right?

Well, if so, then according to a post in another thread ( https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/posting.php?mode=quote&f=66&p=67853 ):

Actually the grey one gets better result than the black one, so good for you. And it's PINDA V2 as well. The PINDA V1 was originaly for MK2, where is only distance sensor in PINDA V1. The V2 has been improvemented by adding thermistor near inductance distance sensor for compensating of temperature drifft of distance sensor....

On its face it sounds as though V2 is better than V1. Is V2 enough better that I would notice the difference if I were to replace my V1 PINDA with a V2 PINDA?

Is yours a recently (past few weeks) delivered kit? Just to keep us on our toes, there's a new "final final" version of the Pinda that's, you guessed it, black. So we have original Dec-Jan black pinda, Jan-May grey, and May onward black.

at least that's what Prusa told me when they shipped me a replacement couple weeks ago. My argument in requesting a replacement is both that the final.final probe is more accurate, but any ongoing development will be focused on that hardware.

I received mine sometime just before April 25. So, by your reckoning, I guess it is v1?

Aside from tip color, what is the difference between the grey PINDA and the "final final" version?

I've got a recent (June 2018) PINDA replacement waiting for me at home as part of a larger spares order. Looking at the online shop page, it shows a black probe tip. My current is gray (April 2018) printer. Is it worth going through the bother of swapping probes, or is this something I should wait to see if I have any issues with?

Where do you see that? I just now tried looking, but didn't see anything.

My current is gray (April 2018) printer.

When exactly in April did you receive your printer (or, perhaps, when was it shipped)?

It seems like having the temperature compensation is really a must. This would explain why I've had some frustrating repeatability issues regarding bed leveling.

I thought Pinda V1 was a three wire beast used on the mk2 printer

my pinda v2 is early black cable

regards Joan,

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

regards Joan,

From what I've read, the cable color varies and isn't a solid indicator. What color is the tip of your PINDA? From what I've read, v1 was black and v2 was grey. Mine is black. Maybe I got the wrong one by accident?

This guy is selling v2 on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/PINDA-v2-Probe-JIMOU-IB2T-B0802N-C4B-7-35-PUR-3D-Printer-Probe-Prusa-MK3/263599040632?hash=item3d5fba2878:g:dnsAAOSwGUxazSq7
From looking at the photos there, v2 is a four wire beast.

Well, # of wires is the same either way. The photos in the assembly manual show the PINDA as having a black tip....

Not sure what to make of all this. Maybe v1 doesn't actually use all four wires?

regards Joan,

Oh yea the thread title threw me but I didn't 'correct' it in my response. The V1 shipped with MK2/S, then the V2 with MK3 - noticeable change being the thermistor for temperature adjustment.

THEN there have been revisions of the temperature-adjustable V2, so call it V2.1 (original black), V2.2 (gray), V2.3 (black is back).

For what it's worth, here's the as-yet uninstalled Pinda V2.3 (nothing identifying it as being different) Prusa sent May 15.

Here's the current PINDA v2 image on the store:

I just checked and realized I received it at the end of March. Here's a picture of the PINDA in action:

Thank you very much for clearing that up!

Aside from the differences in color, which isn't really material to me, does anyone here know of any functional differences between v2.1, v2.2, and v2.3?

Prusa chat says that "it's just a slight design change, functionality is the same"

Prusa Chat is not always correct on some issues, generally those pertaining to more engineering/technical issues. There have been a few threads on first layer issues with some very skilled users working hard and multiple back and forth with support email which tends to be more technical than chat. There have been some, though few, responses from developers in both forums and Github. Summary from my communication with team and what I've picked up following this particular issue over the months:

Pinda 2.1: initial release
Pinda 2.2: improved linearity in temperature measurement (big change)
Pinda 2.3: vague "this one works", possibly just a higher volume purchase of the 2.2. This is the Pinda they are running on MK3's in the production farm.

Thanks for the timeline. Since I received mine in the second half of April, I'm guessing /hoping it's the v2.3 version.
