i3 does not boot when 5V adapter connected

Dear all,

I am totally lost, it does not make any sense to me...

My printer is powered by one power strip. There is also one another 5V power adapter (Meanwell, 5V 12A) to power my raspberry, weed and an additional ESP.
I maintained the printer and put it back into my enclosure. I switched the printer on and it stuck on boot screen with 3 dots.

I tried everything, but it seems it will not boot as long as the 5V devices are connected. I tried different power adapter and stripped my whole installation, because everything was powered by one adapter. Now, it works with a 5V/2A adapter and the raspberry pi.

But when I connect a second 5V/1A power adapter for wled lights, Prusa does not boot anymore. WLED powered by power bank, Prusa boots fine.

What the hell is going on here?

Funny thing:

When the Prusa is not booting, it does not help to detach the USB cable - I HAVE TO UNPLUG THE POWER ADAPTER! Put it back in, like fresh, without any cable connected, then works fine.

I don't understand it at all, what is going on here please? I've never heard of power supplies interfering with other devices like this.

I appreciate your help!

Sebastian

Clearly you are overloading your local power supply.

This *might* be dangerous.

But the main suspect is your power strip - is anything getting hot?  Have you tried an alternative strip?

And are you on a single mains spur that's reaching its limit?

Cheerio,

Okay, first of all... the printer is working again and I was able to finde the troublemaker: WLED/SK6812 Light Strip

It took me again some time today, to figure out, that it was not the power adapter, but something that happens inside the metal enclosure. I connected all power adapters, and was able to boot the printer just outside the enclosure, but not inside.
I had to disconnect the light strip completely, then the printer starts as normal.

The LED strip ist PWM powered, so maybe the "high frequency" is the issue here? Is the printer not shield against radiation from other electronic parts?

I don't know, but I am more then happy, that it works flawless now, but I have to print in the dark.

Since I don't need any coloured LEDs, I will swap them for some white LED strips, with a simple controller - govee or something like that.

What do you think? It is strange that this happens just now. I had the issues some months before, but was gone after a day or so.

Can you put a meter in line with the led strip and find out how much power it's pulling?

Cheerio,

Was not able to test it, but it is not more than 500mA. I used a 1A adapter without problems and also a 2,5A one.

Additionally I used a 20m long cable to connect the WLED to a socket in a different room, wich is also a different phase. I got the same issue.

Interesting.

I do use LED lighting at times - mine is switchable, but it's flat DC, I suppose a strip that close is a good aerial - you might try making a faraday cage or screen but switching to DC is going to be best.

Dear all,

I had another issue with MMU and its power supply so I had to disassamble  everything. I put all back together into the housing, and everything works fine.

Then I also connected the WLED LEDs and you what, the printer boots without issues. It takes takes longer (5s) inside the housing, then outside (2s) but it works.

I have no idea what happened here, but I assume it's about radiation inside the metal housing. Maybe all electric components interfere each other...

Maybe I will switch to the Prusa enclosure, also for other reasons.
