If you just want to get the stuff off the outside of the nozzle and on the heater block I usually just warm it up to low PLA temps and use a small wire brush to scrub it off.

Use extra care to avoid the thermister wire. That sucker is delicate.

after cleaning try using a termal sock over the nozzle, this will help in the future.

I bought an assembled printer, and somehow my Z shifted, and I started printing spaghetti. After multiple failed prints, I finally reset my printer with a live Z adjustment. Now I need to clean the nozzle because it has melted filament on it and the print sometimes sticks to it. How do you clean a nozzle?

If you're using an expensive coated nozzle, a strip of cardboard will allow you to clean it off without damaging the coating. Otherwise, a soft brass bristle brush will do the trick. Just avoid the delicate wires as others noted. Do put something over your print surface or remove it. A LOT of crud will flake off.
