Hot end temperature dropping during print

I'm having an issue with the hot end temperature not holding on the Prusa i3 Mk3.

The hot end heats to temperature and begins the print, but it stops extruding mid-print because the hot end temperature drops back to room temperature.

I am running PLA at 215degC. I preheat, and it will stay at the target temperature no problem. The problem arises only during a print, sometimes an hour or so into a print.

I've checked forums and cannot find a solution to this specific issue with the Mk3.
I've double checked all connections are secure and not damaged.
Can the hot end itself get physically damaged?

I don't know much about the technical components of 3d printers, but it seems like it is not reading the temperature correctly.

Any ideas?

if the set temperature is 215 and it cannot maintain that after moving around for an hour, then it sounds like an intermittent electrical issue either with the heater cartridge or thermistor. does it throw an error code?

nasty little gremlin to chase down since especially with the thermistor wires they are small and delicate and may not always been visibly damaged, even if there are broken strands.

There was no error code.

I did try pausing and resuming to heat back to 215 deg C several times and the printer then went on to complete a 4 hour print with no further problems with the temperature.

Now I've since had 3 really good consecutive prints without the temperature issue.

I'll provide an update if the problem arises again but now I'll call this resolved. Very strange indeed.
