Hot End Help

Lately my prints have been contaminated with this blackish/burnt substance which appears to becoming from the hot end. This afternoon I flipped my printer on its side to get a better look at the hot end and saw the following:

I assume this gunk on the hot end is what is contaminating my prints. I think it is probably burnt filament but I'm not sure where it is coming from. I have an mk2.5 and lately I have been printing with PETG from Maker Geek here in the states at the following temps - 245 first layer / 250 all other layers.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

Re: Hot End Help

PETG tends to stick to the nozzle, especially if you are over extruding a little.

try brushing the hot end with a brass bristled brush, whilst it is hot, to remove the crud, and check your top surfaces of your prints, are not rough, this suggests over extrusion...

if necessary reduce your extrusion multiplier!
