Hemera software problems

So I got a Hemera and installed it following the E3D instructions (replacing my mk3s x-carriage with a mk3 x-carriage when I discovered that the connector plate didn't line up with the mk3s), and compiled/flashed the firmware as instructed.

Now when I try to run the first layer configuration, the extruder rams the left side and grinds for a second, then looks like it's doing okay on the 9 point mesh leveling (except it always does the center spot twice?), then starts the config printing, but shifted a little bit rightward.  When it reaches the left side for the first time it grinds a bit there, then proceeds with the rest of the config print without issue.

I tried printing a xzy calibration cube in the center of the bed, and it again grinds against the left side at the start, and prints shifted.  Oddly, it also raised up a half inch or so in the z direction while printing the initial line, so it was printing in midair erratically.  It printed a bit of the first layer of the cube (shifted, but the model is small enough to not get close to the sides), then raised up again, and then started printing the rest of the first layer shifted to the _left_ rather than the right.

I think I might have belt/bearing issues, as the mid-area behavior seems quite erratic, but the I can't figure out how to prevent the grinding against the sides during my prints.  Some comments have suggested changing the HOME offset or such in the g-code, and I tried a little bit of this with pronterface, but didn't notice any change and am not experienced enough to really go wild tweaking around with the printer internals.

Some people have gotten their Hemeras to work, though, so: how do you prevent the extruder from grinding against the sides during prints?  If I want to try some of the more fancy connector plates that work with the Mk3S x-carriage I'll have to get my printer working at all to be able to print them out, so right now I'm hoping there's some gcode/firmware fix.
