Help please! err: PRINT FAN ERROR

Having fan problems, did the following troubleshooting:

  • maxed out fan speed at 255 and moved the extruder L + R  - fan worked and RPMs were at  4080
  • tested/maxed out hot end fan- fan worked and RPMs were at 4140
  • updated software
  • plugged and unplugged front print fan cable on Einsy

After the software update, it was able to print one 4x4x4-ish project successfully, but soon after it began to have problems again, stopping and showing err: PRINT FAN ERROR. Another problem that occurred was during a print it rejected TPU filament and concurrently had a print fan error, not sure if this was a one off problem or if this helps pinpoint something specific that should be looked at.

Any suggestions would help!

Hoping to re-plug the print fan and hot end fan and check connections on the back of fan, use compressed air to clean fans not sure what other tests or plans of action to do!

Thanks!

If the fan still spins or attempts to spin:

Clean the fan blades, remove any hairs or fine stringing that might have wrapped around the hub - a needle and tweezers job.  Consider lubricating the fan - unmount it, peel back the circular label covering the inside of the hub and put ONE DROP of light machine oil (sewing machine or clock oil) into the hub, replace the label and reassemble.  Make sure the fan connection at the Einsy end is sound and try again.

If it doesn't spin, check the connection as above but the most likely cause is a broken/cracked conductor where the wire goes through a tortuous route at the back of the extruder, you can either solder in a section of cable to patch it or buy a new fan...

Cheerio,

RE: Help please! err: PRINT FAN ERROR

Thank you everyone for your responses.

We have:

  • taken the fan apart to inspect for debris. Nothing substantial. A little dust and maybe 1 hair but nothing that seems to be obstructing it from spinning.
  • lubricated it with some light machine oil.

Ran the print again. Fan error occurred just not as early as the most recent test. I decided to attempt to recreate the error manually. Without starting a print i turned the fan on max speed and moved the extruder carriage from side to side. Even jiggled the cable shroud significantly. No error occurred and the fan kept spinning.

I then decided to check the Einsy port again for kicks. Pins looked good in the socket. The cable leading into the port jiggled lightly but seemed secure. Reconnected the port and started the print again.

Print just finished fine without an error. 1hr long, 6in tall, spiral vase cylinder.

We have disconnected/reconnected the Einsy port before without success so I'm skeptical as to that being the fix. Which takes me back to the cable being cracked some where between the two ends. However, wouldn't that issue present itself when I am manually attempting to recreate the error by turning the fan on and moving the extruder / jiggling the cables?

Any thoughts?

I will run another print to see if the issue has resolved itself and report back.

What speed the fan is running before the error occurs?

Not sure how to check the fan speed when it happens but when I try to recreate the error without a print running I turn the fan up to 255. But like I mentioned it won't kick back an error when I do it manually.

We ran one other print last night. Maxed out the build plate with a cylinder on spiral vase mode. No error occurred. Print was roughly 3 hrs long.
