Heated Bed Hex Screw is Striped, and Stuck
Hey All,
One of the nine hex screws that attach the heated bed to the sliding tray is striped and I can no longer remove that screw or use it to adjust bed leveling.
I've tried a bunch of different things:
- Using the rubber band trick
- Using slightly large allen key. Actually I've used my entire set both metric and imperial to no effect.
- Using a lot of force
- Using a very tiny screw extractor (made it worse, I think).
- I tried to use a flat head screw set. I've tried to cut teeth into it to use the flat head screw, but nothing I have can cut into it.
Does anybody have any ideas on how I can remove this screw? And also where can I buy a replacement?

Keep going up on the size of extractor until it comes out but avoid one that might damage the board. I have even gone to drilling them out (this takes special skill).

Thanks for the suggestion/tip.
I tried using a larger screw extractor. It's not catching on. I think the material that my set is made of is too soft? I tried drilling it out a little so it has a smoother service for the various screw extractors to bite in. But it did not work.
This weekend I will disassemble the tray entirely to remove that screw.

worst case, you could cut through the spacer, beneath the heatbed, with a dremmel and cutting disc, use pliers to remove the screw stub and replace the screw with a new screw and spacer or use the nylock nut method

Not all screw extractors are created equal. Try a different one.

I tried a different set that has a hand tapping mechanism, no luck.
I tried to disassemble the tray, remove all other 8 screws and simply spin the bed until the stuck screw releases. Turns out that another screw was also stripped so I couldn't do that.
I clamped down the assembly and used a Dremel sideways cutting tool to cut through the spacer. Yes, it worked ... but I inadvertently cut through one line of the PCB copper.
This adventure has come to an end now. I am now ordering a new heatbed since the old one is cut. 🙁
Thanks for all the help/tips/comments all!

check the heatbed resistance, on the mk2, the bottom layer was reportedly not used

Wow I did not know that. Constantly learning here!
Broke out the multimeter and measured 2.8 ohms between Vcc and Gnd. Is this an appropriate resistance for a 24V bed?
Google search shows RepRap 24V beds are within range at around 2-5 Ohms. I guess this is similar?

Could save you a few Shekels!
another test, is there any continuity between the damaged areas and the power wires... the top and bottom areas MAY be in parallel...

Thanks Joan!
No continuity on the damaged section on the bottom with either Gnd or Vcc. Looks like your insight is correct, the bottom sections do not seem to be utilized--which makes sense why heat the bottom the pieces is on top!
I went ahead and canceled my replacement heatbed order. 😉
Many thanks!
