Having trouble with hot end thermal runaway

Hello,

I have been recently having an issue with thermal runaway. I have replaced the part fan and the thermistor. Got a couple prints in after that but now I am getting the runaway again. It appears to occur just after the temp is dropped a couple layers in. Any thoughts on where to look next? I am assuming I may have to replace the heater as well. Printer is about 3 years old.

Thanks,

John

Fan Isolation

I've seen this with high performing part cooling fans, and parts that deflect the airflow towards the heater block.

I rolled in Silicone Socks on all of mine, and the problem never resurfaced on my 19 machines.

Note: I usually trim the nozzle opening back to the diameter of the entire nozzle to prevent a glob of doom if the sock shifts.

Solution

Thanks @djkirkendall. That did the trick. I figured it had to do something with the fan because it always happened after the temp change.

Now back to more printing.

Thanks,

John
