Having issue with Y axis

Hello

I have only had my i3 MK3 for only a few weeks, Built it from a kit and it has been working flawless . I had a 7 hour print last night and it printed from start to finish without a problem. Today I started a print and it failed off the start. I ran it through the wizard and it failed ,Then did a factory reset and it came up with a Y axis failure. When I move the table forward and then back I feel a restriction but cant see why. Any help would be appreciated .Thank you in advance .

Hi kk6rgn,

From my own issues with my build, it's all about that restriction you noticed on your build, especially since your printer was working fine.

If there isn't anything in the way of the axis's travel (zip ties or cables), you could check to see if the pulley on the stepper motor has moved closer to it.  At first, I had a lot of restriction because I placed the pulley right beside the stepper motor.  The other end is the other pulley (without teeth) that needs to spin freely as well.  Other than that, you might want to remove the bearings again (such a pain I know) and make sure the rods are clean of dirt and the bearings are rolling relatively smoothly.  Might need to add a little of that lubricant directly inside the bearings.

Just my 2 cents.

on the Y axis, the U bolts can also be an issue, too tight and they crimp the linear bearing cases....

I sincerely wish Prusa Research would say, please lubricate your bearings during assembly

it would save masses of dissapointment and waste time

RE: Having issue with Y axis

I ended up having this issue about a week after I had completed a build and it ended up being that the screw for the tension belt vibrated itself loose.

Kind of related I did also stat have a crash detection on the x-axis which seemed to be dry bearing, adding some lube to the bar seemed to resolve the issue for now, I was to tired at the time to thing of packing the bearings when I removed them and didn't thing to do that till I had reassembled everything.

Thank you everyone for taking your time and giving me tips, I just removed the table for easy access to the bearings , I lubed the bearing shafts to see if this helps, Everything else looks good. When I put this together weeks back they tell you to be extremely  careful when installing the bearings on the shafts and I was, Although  i did have a few balls fall out. They claim if a couple fall out you should be ok.I think I will order some bearings to have on hand. The gear on the y axis looks fine and is not shoved into to far. I will put it back together and give you a update.

Thanks again

Johnny

@kk6rgn

I’m glad you’re enjoying the feedback.

One suggestion....apply the lubricant inside the bearing.  The ends of the bearings have rubber seals which prevents contamination from entering the bearing internals, including grease on the bearing rods.

Well It looks like the lube grease did the trick, I did order some better  quality bearings and when they arrive I will swap them all out, I didn't like the original bearings  from the get go when I was so careful installing them and a couple balls fell out.

  Thank you guys
