Hardware Failure - X Axis

Dear all,
I have purchased a MK3 a few months ago, I have had a makerbot for a couple of years, I am generally familiar with the 3d printing but new to prusa.
I had first successful results, smooth and clean. But I left my printer for about a month with no use and when I went back to print I had a problem. It looked like printer had difficulty to move in X axis. While calibrating the X direction, it was shaking in place and not moving. I turned the printer off, checked the belt, it was not too tight. I moved the nozzle assembly by hand in X direction back and forth a few times and turned it back on and it worked. Print finished successfully. But same calibration process happened for the next print, but this time after it started printing it crashed when print was about 40%. I resumed the print but it looked like the printer has lost the calibration in X direction and it is printing with about 5mm X offset. This made me think that the whatever the problem is, its about X axis movement. This is a new machine, I bought it in January and printed only 5 pieces so far, so I expect the hardware to be in a good shape. I can start playing with screws and pieces but I am sure Prusa savvy people here have experienced this before. Any suggestion how to resolve this?

I have been experiencing a similar problem today.   I assembled my printer a week and a have ago and it was printing well with extremely good results right away.  I have been printing pretty much non-stop for almost a week and suddenly a print failed and the x-axis was all the way to the left, crashed into the bracket for the lead screw.  I re-calibrated everything but have had trouble getting the first layer to stick and now it the X-axis has crashed into the left side again.  Not sure what is going on...

Clean all rods , and put oil on rods(with PTFE inside the oil).

Y-axis 2x

Z-axis 4x

X-axis 2x

Then check the grub screws on x axix if it is fixed.

And if belt is not to loose, so it cannot skip.

I did have a problem that it have some problem to move side to side. I did feel the extroder and it was a bit problem to go left. So what i did was loosing up and try to find wat was the problem to it.

Hi @moe

Where did you buy your printer? Directly from Prusa?

Usually this issue can happen when bearings do not move on the rods smoothly having higher friction increasing the motor current till the threshold where it indicates the crash.

thanks Peter, the belt is not loose or at least it does not skip because of this. I lubricated the x rod and set it up for another print. It's printing now, if it goes all the way without crashing that is a good sign. After seeing the result, I will update this post.

@Zoltan, thanks for your note. I bought the kit directly from Prusa and I assembled it. How do  I resolve the high friction on bearings? Lubricant? any other solution?

lubricant can help. I hope you did not lose to much bearing balls (the best is not to lose any) when assembling the bearings, this can also increase the friction.

What tell the numbers regarding the belt from your support menu? Ususally it says between :260 - 290. The higher number the belt is less tight. Figures under 250 indicate your belt is too tight so lose it a bit.

Switch of the printer and try to move the head manually (slowly, the motor in this mode works as generator not to damage electronics by generated voltage) and check  whether you will feel some increasing resistance.
