Friction on X Axis -> Leading to failed prints

Hey,

I've had a couple of failed prints recently where the x-axis has shifted and then crashed the print. I noted that there was quite a bit of friction in one direction and that after guiding it through a little it smoothed out. Having a look around some others reporting a similar issue I inspected the bearings, which all looked good except for the one imaged below.

From the looks of it, the cap has come off, which I'm guessing would lead to dust etc getting into the bearing and causing the friction and therefore the failed prints?

I'm guessing the best course of action would be to replace the bearing, which I'm looking into the best option for as I'm way at the bottom of the Pacific in New Zealand but I do want to confirm my suspicions and clarify some questions:

  • Does this logic pan out? Should I keep investigating? Does the visual "damage" match what I'm experiencing?
  • As the friction is now gone again, am I safe to resume printing (keen to get a few more face shields made for local efforts), or am I better off just waiting and replacing the bearing first? Would I risk further damage to the motor or belt (as it will cause extra strain and then belt skips as it tries to refind home in a shifted position)?

Much appreciation for the help.

@joantabb

The bearing looks ok to continue with to you?

What lubricant would you recommend? Might be tricky to get with our covid19 status.
