First layer issue

My first layer is really messed up on my MK3S+ near the back of the print bed (image provided). I just did an XYZ and first layer calibration perfectly. What could be the issue?

RE: First layer issue

I'd start with a good scrub with hot water and dish washing soap. That steel sheet has all sorts of debris on it.

What you see there is freshly applied glue from a glue stick right after a thorough cleaning. I've been using that method for years because it helps prints stick to the bed.

PLA sticks great to the PEI sheet without any glue stick. I recommend trying that. It's possible (thought not guaranteed) it could help with first layer. The only time I use gluestick is when printing TPU which is impossible to remove from PEI otherwise.

RE: First layer issue

That looks like a textured sheet to my eye.

Idk what you’re using for first layer calibration but it looks way too negative in the back left corner.

Esteemed user @fuchsr has a great first layer calibration model on the Printables site:

https://www.printables.com/model/105404-calibration-strip-for-simple-live-zfirst-layer-cal

I would give that a try and see if you can dial your first layer in a bit better.

Its also possible you have a partial clog. Have you tried a cold pull?

Damp filament will also give you unpredictable results.

Cheers

RE:

That hasn't been my experience with the PEI textured sheet.  From what I've read in the forums, in may depend on the "batch" and I can say that for me, PLA doesn't stick that well to the PEI sheet no matter how clean the sheet is, and how squished (or not) is the first layer is either.  I've come to use a glue stick all the time and it's been working well for me for PLA sticking, and also helping with PETG and ABS sticking a bit less and not damage the sheet.

Lately, I've gotten my hands on smooth and satin sheets as well and can confirm that PLA stick much better to those.
